When I was reporting my B/R story on Gigi Bryant, I was really struck by how much Kobe invested in making other girls Gigi's age better. He would know them by name, know their moves. What smoothies they liked. He came up with nicknames for them, talked to their parents often.

He genuinely wanted to make them better. So many girls better. And it wouldn’t just be a one time thing. He would work out with so many of them, he was trying to build community. All over SoCal. It wasn’t for show. He really enjoyed it. He loved it.

It really broke my heart to learn that he was going to take them all and put them on a high school team and coach at the HS level. He could coach anywhere. He was passionate about becoming a HS girls basketball coach.

So he would spend time at the practices of local girls HS teams. Once he told a coach he would come for three hours to teach the entire triangle to him. Just because.

@MirinFader I think Kobe has done so much for the women's game showing up at the arenas and inspiring others, next thing your seeing other NBA players like Wall and Beal front row cheering, Minny players going to watch @paigebueckers1 high school game and of course Kobe at HVL's games

@MirinFader I have wanted to coach HS girls cross country (and the track distance squad) for years, but Kobe's death intensified that desire. Plan to start the conversation this year and actually coach -- even just as a volunteer assistant at first -- next year. So excited.
