Edward Jenner, innovator of the the smallpox #vaccine was born #OnThisDay in 1749. Having laid the foundations for contemporary discoveries in immunology and through coordinated public health efforts, smallpox was declared eradicated by @WHO in 1979.

@MicrobioSoc @WHO Let’s not forget the important role of Lady Mary Wortley Montague who introduced the practice of inoculation against smallpox (variolation) to Western medicine after witnessing it during her stay in the Ottoman Empire in the early 1700s.
