Cuddling Impacts Baby's Microbiome 😍
New RCT by
@WeerthDe
et al shows how maternal skin-to-skin contact (1 hr daily from birth to 5 wks) shapes infant gut
#microbiome
composition, maturation, and "volatility".
So cool!
A trainee who attended my
@CIHR_IRSC
career development talk asked me for tips on networking. I wrote a quick list & thought I would share them here too (Thread!)
First: always great to get an introduction (do you know someone who knows them?) But "cold emails" are OK too.
We know
#humanmilk
protects preemies from necrotizing enterocolitis - but how?
This new study dissects the effects of
#humanmilk
(colostrum or mature, raw or pasteurized) on gut & immune cells (routine functions + responses to inflammatory stimuli).
Visited our MILC Lab for the first time today! This was an empty room when I left campus in March: now complete w fancy freezers (they make graphs!), BSC, milk analyzer, PPE galore & even some
#humanmilk
samples!
(... said the girl who vowed never to have a wet lab 🤷🏻♀️)
DYK that
#breastmilk
contains more than 1400 microRNAs? New review from Hatmal et al. explains how they can affect epigenetic patterns (and possibly gene expression) via DNA methylation, histone modifications and RNA regulation

A question I've had since I began studying the
#breastmilk
#microbiome
: what to do about sterilized donor milk?
New study from
@lisafstinson
et al explores "milk microbiome transplantation" - using a bit of mom's milk to colonize donor milk.
Super cool!

New RCT: extra 30 min of skin-to-skin (90 vs 60 min) in healthy newborns led to 44% increase (‼️) in exclusive BF at ~2-3 days, with effects maintained until 14 weeks.
Those are big gains from a 30 min cuddle session!

Dr.

#breastmilk
We know that
#antibiotics
can harm a baby's
#microbiome
and increase their risk for
#asthma
.
... but sometimes babies really need antibiotics! 🤒
What to do? 🤔
Our new
@CHILDSTUDY
research suggests
#breastfeeding
will protect baby from these negative effects🤱🏾
With so many viruses circulating at the moment - it's a good time for a reminder that
#breastfeeding
protects against
#RSV
and other respiratory viruses!
New study finds that both
#humanmilk
& formula supported growth of 24 commensal gut bacteria strains, but ONLY formula (not human milk) supported pathogenic strains.
Results suggest long-chain fatty acid & iron uptake from formula may be responsible.

- across lactation (colostrum --> transitional --> mature milk)
- between preterm and term milk

Nice review from

@LawleyLab
:
Human milk is the ONLY food that has evolved specifically to feed humans.
Yet, more scientific papers have been published on headaches than
#breastfeeding
, and more federal research dollars have been invested to study corn than
#breastmilk
. 🤔
Did I mention
#humanmilk
is amazing?
Beautiful experiments in cells and mice showing that human secretory IgA (found in breast milk) 'traps' Salmonella Typhimurium bacteria to stop them from invading gut tissue and protect the neonate from infection.
New study: formula-fed infants have 50% less regulatory T-cells than
#breastfed
infants
"Exposure of neonate to maternal cells through
#breastfeeding
drives maturation of Tregs & tolerizes neonate to non-inherited maternal antigens"
Once again,🤱🏽=🤯!
Tour de force from Prof Katie Hinde at
#DOHaD2019
: "milk is a biobehavioural negotiation" - the only bodily fluid that is *shared* between two individuals. Unique to each species and the mother-infant dyad's environment. So incredibly fascinating! This is why I ❤️ milk.
New 🐭&👶🏼 study: gestational
#diabetes
affects HMO content of colostrum, which disrupts gut
#microbiome
colonization, which blocks development of important immune cells in the infant. Wow!
Might explain higher allergy/asthma in GDM offspring...?

So many studies (including some of mine 🙄) do not check for sex diffs! What have we been missing?!

Ever wonder if
#breastmilk
might contain biomarkers to diagnose maternal health conditions before they are apparent by symptoms or traditional screening tests?
Here, a test for tumor DNA in milk had 71% sensitivity & 100% specificity for
#breastcancer
.
My parents are finding interesting ways to entertain themselves in quarantine. I don't think they even knew what a meme was before covid! 🤓😷😂

Among other (less modifiable) factors like age & SES, "observing another woman breastfeed" was associated w/ a 43% ⬆ odds of intending to BF exclusively.
