Working on a paper to show that tourism is a net drain on FX as we saw during the pandemic. It mostly creates low wage jobs which we shouldn’t consider a priority IMHO, & waste/pollution that we’re increasingly unable to handle. We don’t need big properties for successful tourism
I *feel* like the whole idea of tourism “helping” the economy of a country is actually a big ass scam but I need one the economist babes to talk about it
@Marladukharan
If u already have what u wanna show in mind, rather than a hypothesis to test, aren't u gonna just do something with clear signs of researcher bias?
@Marladukharan
Read some work a while back (wish I could remember whose) speaking to specifically the cruise ship industry and how the little money it provides for Caribbean countries doesn’t nearly account for the overall damage it causes.
@Marladukharan
Interesting thoughts. I think you’d have to reconcile this hypothesis with the fact that current account deficits widened during 2020 in tourism-dependent economies, even in the face of lower imports from weaker domestic demand and oil prices. That was Barbados’ experience.
@Marladukharan
I hope you’re NOT writing a paper to simply paint a negative picture of tourism. It presents opportunities at the individual and national level but we have to be careful about how the benefits are gained and used. You’re an economist not a lawyer. Balanced argument please 🙏🏾
@Marladukharan
Big tourism invites the waste of the first world to supposedly natural places. The fat trappings of excess, which were supposedly the reason for respite are reimagined but woth blue water. More tours and more cultural exchange with the real people are needed.
@Marladukharan
Given our tourism plant I support the concept of small tourism projects e.g Blanchieussie and its growing B&B offerings!
However we must look beyond what we see and and cease being happy with the familiar- this no longer offers hope nor opportunities based on ROI!
