Fabulous bit of preserved late medieval ridge and furrow field system near Willoughby on the Wolds, Nottinghamshire. The landscape looks like it has been combed through ๐Ÿ˜ #lidar

@MarkWalters_ Amazing clarity. Here's a few fields near me just outside Elmesthorpe SW Leicestershire.

@DrRJWarren @Haggewoods What a fab descriptive word. Iโ€™ll have to call it a baleen of ridge and furrow when I see this landscape in future ๐Ÿ™‚

@MarkWalters_ ๐Ÿ‘Leicestershire has 100โ€™s of examples and itโ€™s a standing joke among family and friends that I look for them when out and about ๐Ÿค“I call them the rib cage of medieval England I was looking at the lumps and bumps at Cold Newton earlier this week

@rossin2 The preservation is great. We only have comparable areas in north east Wales around the Wrexham Maelor area on the Welsh border.

@MarkWalters_ Our village isnโ€™t far from Willoughby. I mapped the LiDAR-visible ridge & furrow around us last year but we donโ€™t have as much as that! ๐Ÿ‘

@DA_Osborne Sounds like a good project. Iโ€™m amazed how much has survived. It must be mostly pasture there as the modern arable farming would have ploughed it all out.

@MarkWalters_ Willoughby on the Wolds is my all time favourite patch of #RidgeandFurrow โ€ฆ I took this shot a looong time ago from the junction of the road and the brook, looking SW over the grass ends and ridges ๐Ÿ’š A rare survival indeed!
