Fabulous bit of preserved late medieval ridge and furrow field system near Willoughby on the Wolds, Nottinghamshire. The landscape looks like it has been combed through ๐

๐Leicestershire has 100โs of examples and itโs a standing joke among family and friends that I look for them when out and about ๐คI call them the rib cage of medieval England I was looking at the lumps and bumps at Cold Newton earlier this week
@MarkWalters_
Our village isnโt far from Willoughby. I mapped the LiDAR-visible ridge & furrow around us last year but we donโt have as much as that! ๐

Sounds like a good project. Iโm amazed how much has survived. It must be mostly pasture there as the modern arable farming would have ploughed it all out.

Willoughby on the Wolds is my all time favourite patch of

โฆ I took this shot a looong time ago from the junction of the road and the brook, looking SW over the grass ends and ridges ๐ A rare survival indeed!
@MarkWalters_
Looks like a DMV top right complete with sunken roads and Tofts
The plough marks also have the classic S shape to them too
Beresford would have loved this photo
