Cracking little multivallate hillfort called The Chesters near Drem in East Lothian, Scotland - terrible defensive position though with that overlooking ridge just 100m to the south!

Surprised they didn't use Kilduff Hill to the SE to site the hillfort - someone else clearly did at an earlier date. The Kilduff Hill enclosure seems to be unrecorded.

@MarkWalters_ Perhaps the overlooking hill and the site were used in conjunction with each other. One as a retreat or safe storage area.

@CraigHoover19 It’s an odd one. There’s no sign of settlement on the ridge. They must have felt that there was no immediate threat in the area and having a ridge above them didn’t matter. They still surrounded themselves with multiple defences though, so they cannot have felt that secure.

@MarkWalters_ Apart from observation, what threat does an enemy on the ridge pose to the 'hillfort'? What long range 'artillery' (missile weapons) might such an enemy have pocessed?

@TastesOfHistory Mainly archery - at just 100m from edge of slope to interior of the hillfort it would have been easy to pour arrows in there, perhaps some with incendiary material
