A suspiciously Roman military looking earthwork found just now with low relief lidar visualisation near St. Briavels, Forest of Dean while I was looking for something else - need to check if this is on the HER !
@DrElScott
The whole area around Hewelsfield and St Briavels is studded with sites but this really stood out. If that really is a small fort it is incredibly well preserved as earthworks. I did loads of fieldwalking round here in the 80's, but cant remember if we got any Roman pot here.
@pighilltweets
The HER have it down as possible medieval field lynchets, but given the shape and the double banks and ditches it must be some form of defended enclosure.
HER got back to me and said they will add it as a possible Roman site now. Think I will get in touch with the local Dean Archaeological Group and try to arrange some fieldwalking when the field is ploughed.
Update - got in touch with the Dean Archaeological Group and it turns out one of them field walked the site 3-4 years back and found Roman pot and a lot of iron slag. Metal detectorists found 3 silver Roman coins dated 10 BC - 10 AD. So far the Roman fort theory holds up.
@MarkWalters_
This is interesting, I know this area well as my Parents used to live in the next village. I did wonder whether whether these remains could relate to an early garden.
