Reporting for night duty out here at the White House, where hundreds are still gathered, chanting face-to-face with riot police. They’ve been at this all day. Reminants of pepper bullets and abandoned masks and gloves dot the ground on H Street. #DCprotest #GeorgeFloydProtests

It’s extremely tense here. People are as scared as they are angry. A rumor of a new line of cops closing in from the north sent hundreds running down H Street. A firework — shooting red & green sparks into the crowd — scattered police and protesters, and knocked over a barricade.

Every now and then, protesters try to tear down a barricade or breach the line of police with riot shields. They’ve been responding with batons and pepper balls shot into the crowd. Front line is mostly US Park Police from what I can see.

Another barricade down. Protesters cheering, lobbing waterbottles at the cops. There’s no barricade separating the two sides now. Some protesters are standing, hands raised between the groups to keep them apart.

Police launched a tear gas canister into the crowd. Protesters covered it with a traffic cone and threw it back. Crowd scattered briefly. Now, the cops are putting on gas masks as a helicopter circles with a spotlight overhead.

Two more canisters fired into the crowd. The protesters caught the first — possibly w/ an umbrella — and threw it back. Officers swatted it away w/ a baton and launched a second. Protesters were less quick that time. Lots of people hit. Gave police time to put up a new barricade.

Back in the medic area, protesters are screaming, “it burns!” Volunteer medics are washing out wounds. Offering people milk and water mixed with antacids for their burning throat and eyes. #DC

The thing about tear gas — and pepper spray balls — is it makes people cough. A lot. Watching as ailing activists are wracked with coughs, so they’re taking their masks off to breathe. We are still in the middle of a pandemic.

Police just unloaded several rounds of shots of pepper bullets into the crowd. Protesters scattered, shouting, “they’re shooting!” Many more coughing and clutching their faces now.

I can’t tell if these guys are National Guard from here, but a bunch of men in military fatigues have started filling into Lafayette Square behind the police line. Protesters are taking notice: “Oh shit, he did send in the National Guard.” Some are chanting: “We want Donald!”
