Believe it was on that ancient website Ecclesiastes where they said there was a "time to gather and a time to cast away." The time to cast away has arrived: I'll be retiring Feb. 1 from the Detroit News. It has been a marvelous 40 years there, 45 years overall. Thank you to all.

Did not expect this: Spoke today with retired Secret Service agent (they were aware of Saturday night, which is more than revealing). They blame, entirely, University of Michigan police. Agents say failing to eliminate "flash point" (tunnel after repeat warnings) was misconduct.

Cannot tell you how many people critique the FSD baseball team and at some point complain about Kirk Gibson's voice inflection. The man has Parkinson's. A small decrease in voice energy hardly diminishes the value of his insights and words. They're gold.

Believe that as a new GM probably is being readied for the Tigers, they must follow a single rule: Listen to AJ Hinch. He knows who's out there. He knows who's inside. Hinch has helped them with personnel on all fronts. He should be entrusted (largely) with the call here.

Going to be a lot of Tigers presences who won’t be playing for the Tigers in 2023. Would be surprised if either Castro returns. Cabrera a percentage bet to retire. Barnhart gone. Gregory Soto is on borrowed time. Candelario won’t be tendered. Expect a lot of moves. A lot.

Reality for the University of Michigan: It will keep two head coaches it should replace. One wanted the NFL and is stuck in Ann Arbor. The other is essentially on death row after a second incident. Those circumstances are not in U-M's institutional favor.

Been said before, must be said again: Saw no way a 40-year-old Miguel Cabrera could better his 2022 season. Instead, he's going out with as much luster as was possible. Credit to a Hall of Famer. Credit also to the Tigers for handling this whole season with uncanny sensitivity.

Major rookie mistake by Scott Harris. So, learn from it, and not just about trade-deadline screw-ups: He needs to view the Tigers and Detroit as something other than a clinical commodity. It's a baseball audience. An original one. He's so detached, so distant, it's embarrassing.

Yes, still believe the Tigers and Justin Verlander will work out a 2022 deal. He won't have pitched for nearly two years in a big-league game, and turns 39 next April. But a one-year, even two-year deal (tied to 2022 performance) makes sense for both parties.

Three revisions to the Hall of Fame ballot I'd make, and have supported, in the past: (1) No 10-man limit. If a guy's a Hall of Famer, vote for him. (2) All ballots should be made public (HOF quashed this). (3) Return to a 15-year period of eligibility. That's simple justice.

To repeat: The Miguel Cabrera farewell has worked out about 1,000% better than was imagined or forecasted here. Rather than this being a demeaning struggle, the Tigers have in fact (their strategy) used him just often enough -- and he has hit just enough -- to have made it work.

Nomar Mazara simply has lost in his bid to hold onto a Tigers outfield spot. Daz Cameron, Grossman, Akil Baddoo, Derek Hill when he gets back -- Jake Robson at Toledo -- or even Victor Reyes. There is no room for Mazara.

Tigers students had a right to focus on Cabrera and 500. But the bigger story was taking two out of three at Toronto, in what were a pair of exceptional baseball games. The quality of play was high-altitude.

Biden will win. But what an error believing this country hadn’t lost its mind, and its soul.

Javier Baez is simply a mistake. Question for the Tigers will be: When can they accept the mistake and have a necessary separation? They'll need a replacement, obviously. Once a stand-in arrives, they'll need to fact facts, say goodbye -- and get better. It's inevitable.

Kelly Stafford just took repeated sacks with the ball at the 1-foot line. Another one who, sadly, is educated and who thinks you can have it both ways: businesses open and a pandemic, the worst plague this country and world has seen in 100 years, contained. What an embarrassment.
