Samuel Coleridge Taylor

The earliest and probably most well known Black British composer from the late 19th and early 20th century.
Samuel was born to an British mother and Sierra Leone father - who left the uk before learning that Samuel was born. He was named after the poet Samuel Coleridge Taylor
By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was already earning a reputation as a composer. He was later helped by Edward Elgar, who recommended him to the Three Choirs Festival. His "Ballade in A minor" was premiered there.
Coleridge Taylor wrote an extensive library of work but the piece most often played in his own time and that brought him international fame was his cantata Hiawatha’s wedding feast.
