Referred to as the Black Mahler. But of course we know better than to compare his individual talent to his white contemporaries.

Samuel’s grandfather was himself a violinist and taught his grandson in his home. His musical gifts were recognised early and encouraged.

By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was already earning a reputation as a composer. He was later helped by Edward Elgar, who recommended him to the Three Choirs Festival. His "Ballade in A minor" was premiered there.

Coleridge Taylor wrote an extensive library of work but the piece most often played in his own time and that brought him international fame was his cantata Hiawatha’s wedding feast.
