Black Americans paid taxes during segregation for pools they weren't allowed to swim in, fountains they couldn't drink from and buses they had to ride in the back of. So...miss me with this "Why am I paying for school I didn't go to?" At least this is about uplift, not hate.
“Woke” was a term developed within the African-American community as a reminder to be aware and prepared. It was stolen to be directed at White people suspected of “virtue signaling” as a way to disarm its power and pervert it. Using it as a pejorative tells on yourself.
Two margaritas deep, I heard a song playing called you can go your own way, and I was like wow they are really singing their ass off. Looked it up it’s two band members breaking up I am in TEARS! YOU CAN GO YOUR OWN WAY 😭😭 watched the live performance. he can’t even look at her
This is only scandalous to people who've never been into a Williams-Sonoma or a Le Creuset, who've never purchased quality cookware, or who go out of their way to begrudge Black people anything marginally more expensive than the olive oil aisle at Marshall's.

dropped nearly $600 at boutique Parisian cooking shop E. Dehillerin, an impressive haul that includes this lovely $375 oval dish.
Words mean things. Words like “still ain’t got a job” and “we’ll move out of the shelter.” Projecting your modern spin on a song clearly about working class hopelessness and addiction is so weird. Nobody was making a good life in this song. Try again.
Fast Car” was always a sad song, but in 1988 when it released, you arguably *could* run away with your partner and make a life on the salary of a grocery-store checker. 35 years on it reads as much sadder

remember that Sojourner Truth’s speech was translated to minstrel vernacular by a white woman? She didn’t speak in a stereotypical Southern dialect because she wasn’t from the South and spoke Dutch. Why is this important?
Did you know Sojourner Truth’s first language was Dutch? The version of her speech we are taught today “aint I a woman” was a version transcribed years later by a white woman who rendered her speech in what she imagined to be Black southern vernacular. That’s not how Truth spoke.
As a grief writer I’m often asked the right way to acknowledge loss. Kimmel does this genuinely and beautifully because he starts with asking how Ms King is at that moment. Not “Are you healed and we can move on” but “Right now, where are you!” A lovely moment.
The voice crack from Jimmy. The arm reach from Regina to let him know that she’s okay. I’m reminded of a recent quote Ms. King gave to HARPER’S BAZAAR: “A smile doesn’t always mean happy.” Her smile, in this moment, was strength. We love you, Regina.
This is painful and real. When she said that she never knew that she’d entered a marriage were her ability to feed her kids was based on her husband staying in love with her, I teared up. Get your education, ladies. A good man shouldn’t be threatened by you being capable.
Lady is warning the young brides with no plan. She got married at 19. She was the brains behind a few businesses but nothing was ever in her name.
When they divorced he got to keep everything and she was left with no money and been struggling since.
Poor people and fat people are expected to suffer publicly, to never be happy or show anything less than shame. If the clerk rings up a steak and the purchase goes through and you scrimp the rest of the month that’s no one’s business.
When I had food stamps, I’d cook a lavish feast at the beginning of the month with a library cookbook. It was one small moment of joy I looked forward to. I budgeted the rest of the month, mostly eating miso soup the other 30 days. Policing people’s food + aporophobia is so gross
Kid Rock is a wealthy kid from Michigan who cosplayed as a Detroit rapper/rocker. He then became a Southern rocker with a Confederate flag. Beyoncé is from Texas with Louisiana roots but she’s the one appropriating culture?
Marie Kondo was never against YOU having all the books in the world if they sparked your joy. They don’t spark hers. Her minimalist space sparked hers. Just love your books and don’t misquote someone who was trying to help people tap into their joy.
If you think a song about a young Black woman raised in the anti-poverty Reagan era whose mother left her alcoholic father, who pinned her hopes to a jobless loser she lives with in a shelter as she dreams of the burbs is hopeful, you’re delusional.
@Jezebel
“Jagged Little Pill” was released the year I turned 24, my first year on my own as an adult. It’s power and rawness scared me, challenged me, galvanized me. It’s ok not to feel the same about it. But you don’t have to dismiss it because you outgrew it.
My husband died in 2015. I spent three weeks floating through a haze of shock, despair and bourbon (with a hint of pie) until I used some of the insurance money to fly to Little Rock with my almost two-year old to see my mommy. I had nothing left.
Paul R. Williams, architect of some of the grandest homes in Hollywood & iconic buildings in L.A., learned to draw upside down bc his clients did not want to sit next to a Black man.
His handwriting is portrayed in the Beverly Hills hotel sign, which he could not stay at.
I wanted to clarify for the confused. I wasn’t saying that Black graduates won’t benefit from the plan but that there is precedent for taxpayers contributing to things they did not - or legally could not- benefit from.
I don’t care what she sells. I’m gonna buy something. I am not a super fan as much as I support this woman who has become the scapegoat for the sins of an entire monarchy with a powerful press system at its behest. How much is that fancy jam, girl? I’ll take two.
This post made my eye twitch. Do not listen to this person. You can’t predict how busy security, traffic or parking will be. You can’t predict that weather won’t cancel your flight and your physical presence in front of a customer service person and not someone who won’t…
the myth that you have to arrive two hours before your flight is propagated by airports to make you spend more money on overpriced snacks. you really only need to arrive 5-10 minutes before departure

Ok so I have so many thoughts about Louis Tomlinson and his disappointment with the interview that keeps asking about his grief. I’ve been both the journalist with the uncomfortable question and lately the grieving subject on the other end. I’m Team Louis. Here’s why:
Black people don’t expect to be centered in St Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo as it’s not about us. Centering non-Black people in

British people confused who billionaire Tyler Perry is and think he was nobody before Meghan and Harry will feel better knowing that before his first movie, he was already a millionaire playwright and producer that a lot of White Americans had never heard of.
“Small Town” by Mellencamp is a working class song. “Proud Mary” is a working class song. “Do You Know The Way To San Jose” is a working class song. “Midnight Train To Georgia” is a working class song. “Fast Car” is about generational poverty struggling to even be working class.
Again this young woman, who I admire for her business sense and growing awareness, uses her platform to educate her fans in a way that others can’t. I remain impressed.
I broke up with my first serious boyfriend in my mid 20s the weekend after he refused to let my friend, who had driven an hour to do my hair, eat out of a pot of Noodle Roni he’d made at my house. Like, it cost $1 a packet but it was HIS. The last straw. But before that
I divorced my first husband because of socks. Similar story to this, very similar, but it was me coming home from a work trip to LA. Exhausted, rolling in my suitcase in the front door, thinking about how I needed to run a load of laundry for work early the next am but wanted/
@oneunderscore__
Dude. He shot Black people because he hated Black people. His toothache and lack of healthcare might be factors but he didn’t drive three hours to shoot dentists. He shot people who look like me. Whatever posturing you’re doing to sound clever is insulting. Stop.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe is credited as the Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Before Elvis, Johnny Cash or Little Richard, there was Sister Tharpe- A Black woman who forged her own sound in a male dominated industry. She does not get the credit she deserves.
My grandma passed yesterday. She was everything and I wish you’d met her. I had her for 52 years and I don’t know what life is without her. Hug everyone you love.
@Alyssa_Milano
As a widow who lost my husband when my son was not yet 2, I don’t feel the same way you do about it. It’s not “Protect her from a bear on a episode of ‘Little House.” I feel my husband would just want my son to love me and comfort me.
@Shanemgillis
That’s not an apology. That’s an “If you really ARE offended by my artful pushing of boundaries then I guess I’ll pretend to be sorry, ya snowflake who doesn’t get comedy.”
That anyone would see these beautiful little girls having a special moment with their daddy and think they have an "attitude" that needs to be "humbled" is the epitome of misogynoir and that's you bigots' issue. Confident girls are harder to subjugate. Stay proud, babies.
On the 2nd flight from Atlanta to LR the baby and I sat next to a nice older man who saw my dazed and tear-stained face. He did not ask why I was crying but when the baby got fussy he played with him and made him smile. He saw a person drowning and helped.

This is gross. Black girls are magic but we get to control who uses it. How dare you use our empathy and wisdom as a joke while implying that we are handed opportunities that should belong to sad white dads who just want to pay for prep school.
Also I wanted to let you know, if you don't, that I'm an author who wrote a book called "Black Widow" about grief, resilience and bourbon. I'd love you to read it. Thanks.
He was not obligated to be nice to us but he saw a hurting human and helped calm her fussy baby. When I told him why we were traveling he said “I knew something was wrong and I am sorry.” That sustained me till I got off the plane and collapsed in my mom’s arms.
So the white kid can make a potion to create a superhero family, a thing that isn’t real, but the Black kid can’t be president, a job that exists and a Black
man has had? If I heard this man had said this to my Black child that school would never hear the end of if. Terrible.
But the pettiness that it takes to assume that a parent and their kids are not only there to destroy your peace but are evil bastards and then tweet that to thousands of people is astounding. I’m sorry you got ice spilled on you. I’m sorry it was a trigger.
For thousands of years, disease pathogens have spread from person to person. Never before have carriers been blamed for infecting the next sick person. That is a very dangerous ideology.
Babies are not always perfect travel mates and I can’t imagine if you’re in a bad way and then this mewling tiny thing starts causing a ruckus next to you. Travel is hard and expensive and terrible and I get it.
But almost no one chooses to travel with a very young child solo unless they have to. Bereavement, work, some emergency. Understand I didn’t want to be on that plane any more than some people probably wanted me there and I get it.
@michaelharriot
What’s also interesting is the phenomenon where some white performers are famous differently in some parts of the black community. Like how some white people assume Phil Collins, Hall and Oates and Michael McDonald are cheesy. And black fans take them super serious.
When a Black woman talks about something from her personal experience and identifies how gender and race factor in, why do so many people need to jump in and tell her it doesn’t matter and applies to everyone? We aren’t denying your experience. BUT THIS ISN’T ABOUT YOU TODAY.
The sickness of this: The power imbalance, approaching a young non-white woman who might automatically believe that this white man in a suit, although he's a stranger, is in charge of her. Probably makes minimum wage and needs that check. It's not a funny joke. It's torture.
In case you aren’t paying attention, saying that Black people will vote for a person whose politics are harmful to them because we like sneakers is deeply racist. It’s vile. They are calling us fools blinded by so culture that we can’t see what’s good for us. Reject this.
When Kate and Camilla literally snickered when the Black clergyman spoke at Meghan’s wedding knowing they were on camera I said to my mom “uh-oh. She’s gonna have issues with them.”

Prince William, Kate Middleton, & Sophie. Meghan greeted them during the commonwealth service, they ignored her. In CHURCH! Service celebrating Commonwealth citizens who are majority brown & black.

I don’t live in the UK so I have no clue who these “journalists” but I’ve never seen such a nasty, slanted line of questioning and such a delightfully deft rebuff. Shalit handed every snarky leading inquiry with strength and logic. Their frustration was delicious.
I am a Black woman with a Black son. I can’t grade your ironic racist phase on a curve. You could kill people. You are understood. But you can’t be forgiven till you admit you were wrong. No excuses. And maybe not even then. My survival doesn’t depend on my forgiving you.

@notcapnamerica
I didn’t say anything like that. I said that these women are racist. They yell “It’s February!” They know what they are saying and they rely on people like you to defend and coddle them and say they need to be educated. They know what they said.
@seahorsebend
Jenn: I am sorry. This happened to me too. And I want you to just breathe. You can’t chart your way through yet. You have to start with letting the shock reverberate. Be easy on yourself. You don’t have to do anything but be. Please contact me if you need to.
Who cares if a teenager doesn’t know the music you knew when you were a teen? Introduce them! Y’all didn’t come onto this earth knowing all the stuff you know now either. Doesn’t matter when they meet the good stuff. Shut up and play it for them.

My neighbor, who worked in healthcare, died of COVID three days before Christmas. She left two young kids, a grieving husband, sister, parents and close friends. She was maybe 40. And every time I leave my house I see the decorations she didn’t live to take down. Wear. A. Mask.

So some lady you don’t know starts questioning you about your college plans and basically demanding to see your papers, and she’s a nosy adult who doesn’t work for the school so you keep your head down because you owe her nothing. Sounds like a reason to have the cops come.
For those of you who don’t know what agents do: you don’t pay them or shop for them. They choose to represent you.

is the tip-top agency. They aren’t a modeling agency and they don’t represent people they can’t make money off. Just so you know.
@randysharpswife
If you don’t need them don’t buy them. They aren’t going to stop selling the ones you like. This doesn’t have anything to do with you. You’re actually mad people who aren’t you are being accommodated and that’s sad. For you.

And the fact that she thought she was entitled to those answers is what privilege is. I assume I belong in this space more than you. And that I have the right to investigate whether it humiliates you or not.
Jared Kushner says if you cried or expressed your public condolences after the killing of George Floyd you were probably just ‘virtue signaling’ and were doing ‘more to polarize the country.’
True story: in 1993 I worked at a crappy mall clothes store in Miami. The regional manager came in once and said to me “I’m sorry to say this but you have to watch those Black girls because they steal.” So as she was harassing two Black girls who never touched a thing…
Twelve women stealing $8 million dollars in merchandise is bananas. You can really accomplish a lot while security is busy following black women around the store.
If your offense is on the front page, your fake apology is on Twitter and your 2nd attempt is a private email to the husband of the offended and a whiny Instagram post but none in the paper you work for, you're probably not sorry. Just sorry it didn't go like you thought.
Which is why this app is full of Black people with stories of being told about their lives, confidently, by folks who don’t know us. That we all went to school for free. That none of us have fathers. That we can all sing. They were told this and we can’t tell them otherwise.
This is why it's important to have people of diverse backgrounds and knowledge in the room. That not one person said "The optics of this are bad - bring some groceries so it looks less opportunistic" means they're surrounded by the wrong people.
William and Kate didn't bring any food to their foodbank photo-op, but they did bring a publicity entourage that included a reporter, a videographer, and at least *nine* photographers.

“Please respect our privacy by not making up stuff about us in the tabloids or printing personal letters to my family members” is not the same thing as “We’re never going to be in the public eye again.” You get to choose how you’re seen. That’s not a hard concept.
I don’t know one woman who hasn’t mentioned a real or imagined boyfriend or husband, or some other thing to back off unwanted attention, because being direct can get you killed. We will say whatever keeps us alive.
@BillieJeanKing
Ma’am. I respect you so much and you know how deeply intrusive scrutiny can be. This young woman took charge of her life like you did in some ways, even with the disapproval of the establishment. Please grant her the tolerance you didn’t get.
The continued crap flung at Meghan Markle is proof that not even a global pandemic can kill jealousy, racism and idiocy. She’s moved on and will, like Drew Barrymore in “Ever After,” not be thinking of you again. But y’all haters will think of her quite often. Stay mad.
