You base your work on a centralized explorer/API which is top of the line for your dapp. Quick, easy, gives fast results for your users Then suddenly for whatever reason the explorer/API goes down All your work for nothing, everything broken. Users are angry Was it worth it?

People seem to misunderstand. This is not a jab at Avalanche. It's just the latest example of how you cant rely on centralized services and APIs. Snowtrace is part of Etherscan. Same as mainet, polygonscan, optimismscan, gnosisscan etc They can all go down. Are we ready for it?

@LefterisJP Can't they just get the data from the contracts directly through the rpc nodes? It's not that hard...

@Beastlyorion No. Not all data is available through the node. That's a fundamental problem with all EVM chains.

@LefterisJP You should rely on indexers like @subsquid or @subgraph

@LefterisJP The cost of loss is lower than the cost of a decentralized api though

@LefterisJP You can use mobula instead! Transparent migration. 😁👍 We’re even giving away free api credits to companies that have been touched by snowtrace shutdown.

@cxzdeer @avax This has nothing to do with avalanche though. This is only about centralized APIs upon which we all rely on. Snowtrace is ran by the etherscan team.

@LefterisJP The thinking might have been that it would be worth it if I got the momentum? It would be good if they pulled the plug after alternatives were in place.

@LefterisJP Seems like a product that needs to be open sourced & replicated in order to breakdown these dependencies.

@LefterisJP Yeah… someone has to foot the bill considering what options exist (other than yes local apps with bundled indexer) As long as people can put their own indexer in their settings, it should be ok. Issue here is that ES was always closed source so we can’t tell what can be reused

@LefterisJP I don't think we need to decentralize every stack, as long as the core data layer is decentralized and composable. It's just a tradeoff people are willing to bear (cheap and fast integration).
