Shout it, parking 👏 is 👏 political 👏 Heavily subsidised parking permits are a transfer of public space & money from the more deprived to the more wealthy, administered by the council. By holding prices way below market rates, the council starves itself of transport funds.

If a fruit & veg seller wants a bit of public space for a stall, the council will charge them up to £25 a day If a wealthy executive wants a bit of public space for their Tesla, then the council will give it to them for £3.08 a month (10p a day). Parking in Lambeth is too cheap

On Lambeth estates, each year it costs £52 to store a bike or £32 to store a car. For a couple with 3 kids, it costs EIGHT times more to store their bikes than a car. Please @JackHopkins_Lab , @JenniferBrathwa & @cllr_andywilson , rebalance the subsidy for storage away from cars.

If you rent a parking space in Clapham on the open market () long term, you'll pay about £200 a month (£2,400 a year) If you rent it from the council, they'll charge just £15 a month (£180 a year) This is what a public subsidy for drivers looks like 💸

Urban SUVs are not okay, councils can disincentivise them via a surcharge for: - having bigger engines - weighing over 1800kg Or require 2nd permit for being more than 2.4m long (2 spaces) Or bollards either side of road that force wide cars to slow & often scratch them.
