Agonisingly painful. Imagine your wife and children are killed, you lose your home, and you’re also displaced. Wael, the journalist from Al Jazeera remains calm and dignified but the layers of trauma are unspeakable and the grief will take years to process
This is heartbreaking on so many levels..
when I was in Gaza I asked Wael if he ever thinks about retiring in another country and he answered: this is my land, there is no meaning for safety if you are not in your land.
Wael is originally from Gaza, his family has lands. And…

Yehuda Shaul, Israeli human rights activist, explains that the settlers are taking advantage that attention is focused on Gaza to accelerate their efforts to expel Palestinians. "In many cases the Israeli army is accompanying the settlers, in many cases the settlers are the army"
Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank is getting worse by the day. The UN says the number of attacks has risen sharply since 7th October. Many Palestinian villagers are now fleeing their homes for good as a result of threats against their land, and their lives…
All still unfolding.
See this as :

*Palestinian response to worsening/unbearable oppression under occupation. But operation will only make things worse for Pal civilians. 2/4
10 Lots more to say abt region, US policy, Saudi Arabia reax, Iran domestic reax, local dynamics... more later, but for now then read Dexter Filkins' piece from 2013 on Suleimaini, the best profile out there:
Hezbollah and Iran have signaled clearly, repeatedly, they want to avoid a wider war. Israel keeps testing that position...At some point, it will miscalculate...
BREAKING: Israel killed a top commander of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in a strike on south Lebanon, a security source told
@AFP
today, adding to fears the conflict in Gaza could spill over.
2 A combination of elation, relief and fear here in the region among people who suffered tremendously from Suleimani's policies, from Lebanon to Syria and Iraq. Elation and relief because he was seen as the evil mastermind of policies of death and destruction...
Biggest Israeli Intel failure since 1973 October war. Ironically on 50th anniversary of that failure.
Big difference is that 1973 was traditional war, with tanks and battalions.. Todays images are shocking, involving death of civilians inside their homes
My thoughts are with the millions of young Saudis for whom Jamal Khashoggi wished a better future and who may be wondering what lies in store for their country, my thoughts are with the millions of Iranians, Syrians, Egyptians... all the people of this region. We deserve better.
3 ...propping up bloodthirsty oppressive militias, overseeing a devastating war in Syria, feeding/playing on sectarian hatred, helping crack down on protestors in Iran (2009/2017/2019), Iraq now, and likely more recently helping Hezb to navigate protests in Lebanon.
5 and so there's celebration and relief from Iran, to Iraq to Lebanon and Syria, among those, Sunnis and Shias who suffered from his evil mind. I write about him in my forthcoming book Black Wave and the deadly dynamics of revenge that he pursued after Iran-Iraq war
7 some of his aura or reputation was probably overblown, but he really was indispensable to Iran, he was not on a mission, he WAS the mission, the architect of Iran's expansionist regional policy, the indispensable upholder of the Islamic Revolution, keeping it alive for Khamenei
Israel tries this every time, with devastating consequences. It doesn't work. In '06, Israel thought that bombing civilian infrastructure in Lebanon would turn ppl against Hezbollah. Even those who hate Hezbollah were enraged that Israel hit Lebanon's bridges, power plants etc
Israel has bombed hundreds of what it calls "power targets", from high-rise residential towers to universities and banks—not because they have serious military significance, but because hitting them is meant to undermine Hamas (which is both proscribed under IHL and ineffective).
4 Note that he had just flown back from Beirut.... and it's definitely not his first visit.... There were reports of him being in Lebanon in 2006 to help Hezbollah strategise in the war against Israel.
6 there is fear because he was so central to almost every regional event in the last two decades that even people who hate him can't believe he could die, a bit like people couldn't believe Saddam was really gone. He seemed invincible, omnipotent. What happens in his absence?

The sad reality is that these kind of evictions have been happening for years, and increasingly so under Netanyahu's government but rarely made the news in the US or Europe.
The UN says as many as 120 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since Hamas' attack in Israel.
@mattfrei
speaks to Palestinian families choosing to ignore the threats and intimidation of Israeli settlers, and those being forced from their homes.
This may be a stupid q but it’s been stuck in my head, would love a thoughtful answer: how do you train for paragliding in Gaza undetected by Israelis? Is this something you can learn indoors on a simulator? Enuf with theory in text book? go out there and it will come naturally?
9 There is anger too of course, among his supporters, allies, proxy militias, who were devoted to him and lionized him and will be lost without him. There is no replacement that I know of or can see. They will be mulling their next step for a bit. First, huge displays of mourning
Suicide rates are rising in Gaza. Whatever your politics, it's a sign of the growing desperation of young people who see no future, no way out of a place described as the largest open air prison.
#deathbydespair
Delivering aid like this, with air drops and sea corridors is usually done to assist civilians in countries with regimes hostile to US, not a territory where an American ally is waging war. This is unprecedented.
In announcing the Gaza port, Biden admin officials said in briefing call that land crossings are “the most efficient, cost-effective way to get assistance in" but "the President has directed...that we not wait for the Israelis [to open them]"

, for 40yrs, the state and the militants have been eliminating every reasonable voice there is.
Will Hezbollah respond to the assassination of a senior Hamas leader in Beirut? “The decision is theirs,” Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib tells me. “We hope they don’t commit themselves to a larger war… We have a lot of reasons to think that this will not happen.”
Under the old rules of the game this is the least Hezbollah can do to signal support without risking wider confrontation. After yesterday’s events, we dont know for sure. My assessment is that this is it…for now.
I keep having flashbacks to 1982, Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, the siege of Beirut, calls to eliminate/clean up the militants, (PLO at the time) and now… the suggestion of a multinational force… let’s just say it didn’t end well….
This is a hell of a trial balloon. Absolutely nuts: "The US and Israel are exploring options for the future of the Gaza Strip, including the possibility of a multinational force that may involve American troops if Israeli forces succeed in ousting Hamas."
Dutch press give the new US ambassador a rough time: “this is the Netherlands, you have to answer questions”.
