HOW I LEARNED TO SWIM
by Somebody Jones
Jamie is taking on her biggest fear, the ocean. With the help of a chipper swim instructor, a shady spiritual guide and one cathartic crab sandwich, she’s questioning, ‘how many lengths will wash away regret?’
If you didn’t believe me then, believe me now that you don’t have to win the Women’s Prize to get opportunities
Forever grateful for
@katieposner
and
@elliekeel1
and the entire Women’s Prize and Paines Plough crew
Announcing: the recipient of our 2023 Playwright Fellowship, Somebody Jones.
We were blown away when we first read Somebody’s play How I Learned to Swim in 2021 for
@WomensPlayPrize
and have followed her other work closely since then, championing her development as a playwright.
My play, HOW I LEARNED TO SWIM made it to the
@theatre503
shortlist 🥳
It was shortlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award in ‘21, a finalist for the Women’s Prize in ‘22, and is ready to make its stage debut!
Who wants to help get it there 👀 Any interested producers, hit me up
I would love a festival of play readings this summer.
A theatre gives a couple writers a little bit of money and every night there’s a new play with a talkback after
‘How I Learned to Swim’
@JonesSomebody
has been shortlisted for the Popcorn Writing Award 2024 🍿
Very excited to be recognised in this prestigious award amongst other incredible writers who are lighting up
@edfringe
this year 🔥
I feel like most people know me as a playwright, but I'm a dramaturg too 😎
I've recently dramaturged for The Globe + Almeida, and love working with playwrights who are exploring genres like magical realism, horror, verbatim + fantasy
So if you need a dramaturg, hit me up!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from The Guardian for my show, HOW I LEARNED TO SWIM 🌊🌊
“The depths plumbed by Somebody Jones’s new play are extraordinary as one woman’s swimming lessons open up an expansive world of aquatic Black history and myth”
I got a canvas print of my show because I think it’s so important to celebrate wins. And after 3 years of trying to get this show on, then having a fully sold out run, I’d call this a win 😊
We had our first rehearsal today 🤩 I hope I never get over the feeling of seeing my poster at Brixton House
If you’re in the building this month, come by and say hi 👋🏼
I got married this weekend 🤩
To the best cat dad to Chewy. More photos to come (especially of my jumpsuit WITH pockets because y’all know I’m not the wedding dress type)
Off to our honeymoon for now ✈️
For the first time ever- the Bruntwood Prize Longlist is 130 scripts. We hope this reflects the quality & creativity of the 2022 entrants and our desire to offer useful support to playwrights
So so honoured to have won 🥺
This play was so fun to write and would not have been possible without the brilliant Soho Team,
@JulesMHaworth
,
@Gilltopia
(to name a few) and especially my fab dramaturg
@La_kee_sha
. Who had me chop off 30 pages 😆 (which needed to happen!)
And the winner of this year's

Jamie wants to learn to swim, which wouldn’t be so scary, but she just turned 30. To find closure after her brother’s disappearance, she decides to face her fear. This play explores Black people’s relationship to water w/ a bit of magic.
First look at the breathtaking ‘How I Learned to Swim’: this powerful, heartfelt and magical play is making waves already 🏊🏽♀️

We talk about theatre gatekeepers a lot, but I also want to add people who don’t respond to emails to the conversation
It will forever be wild to me when people reach out to read MY play and then ghost
If you didn’t vibe with it, just say so? I’m sick of dragging carrots 🥕
It’s my face! Very honored/excited/all of it to have the resources to explore a piece close to my heart - PRESENT BLACK FATHERS
And to meet and experience the work of these other fine artists 😍 Already obsessed
We are unbelievably excited to share the recipients of the 6th round of

recipients! Head over to our website to read all about them:
Submitting for this prize was one of the best things I did for my career
I mean it when I say that you do not need to win to “win.” I got so much out of this by being a finalist. Made so many connections, met so many fab people, including the other amazing finalists
Submit!
Last year I saw 55 plays 🎭
With an average of ~4.5 plays a month
I saw the most shows in October (8) and the least in August (0)
Hoping to see even more this year
Yesterday, we said goodbye to Chewy aka Shrimp aka Monster aka Street Fighter Chicken
She was 18 yrs old & I feel privileged to have had her since she was a kitten
But my partner & I are so broken. If I don’t respond to texts/emails, this is why
Hold your cats close today ❤️

Applying for any visa is scary, now especially
I would not have gotten mine if it wasn’t for two people sharing their applications with me
So if you’re getting ready to apply or know someone who is applying, def come to/share this
Thinking of applying for a Global Talent Visa?
In light of recent legislation to curb 'legal migration' (🤮) we want to support migrant artists thinking of applying for a GTV.

I think it’s pretty incredible that both shows that Emma directed AND dramaturged ended up on the shortlist
SWIM would not be as magical or dramaturgically sound/strong if it were not for her critical eye, attention to detail, and passion

As a former escape room manager of two different companies, I can confirm and also say that the nicer you are to your “competitors” the more business you’ll have
It was so incredible being Paines Plough’s playwright fellow. Much more than words or a mere tweet would allow. But I can’t thank the team enough for believing in little ol’ me and all the other brilliant writers they’ve supported
Brilliant memories. And lots more to be made. Thank you

Shout out to good rejections emails
No one ever likes getting them, but ones that can reject + inspire you are gold
There’s a comp that I apply to every year (and get rejected every year 😅) and every time I apply, they’re like, “We’re so happy to see your name on the list.”
As a migrant who’s faced barriers for not being a British citizen (shout out to that one time I was told “someone like me” shouldn’t even be allowed into this country 🙃) I am so appreciative of Projekt Europa and for this opportunity 🥳

Magical realism exists!
What if UK/US theatre took a break from realism for 3 years? I’d love to see what would happen
Let’s see some fantasy! Sci-fi! Anything but another family/house play!
This was my hope when I wrote HOW I LEARNED TO SWIM. I want more Black women not to feel ashamed to take swimming lessons as an adult and ultimately become more comfortable in the water 🏊🏾🏊🏽🏊🏼
After watching
@ScriptsByRose
do the 100 rejections challenge every year, I've finally decided to do it
The idea is to track how many rejections/submissions you get/do a year. I love the idea of actually seeing what you applied to
Here's to 100 rejections/submissions in 2023!

Not a big theatre org telling me that artists shouldn't be paid fairly 🫠 Not after they decided to eliminate several paid opportunities for freelancers 🫠🫠
Working with Paines Plough has been an incredible experience and I would love for them to continue to be able to support other writers in the way that they’ve supported me

I'm begging to see more positive (or at least complicated) Black & Brown dad representation on stages
I want goofy B&B dads, nerdy B&B dads, etc. I wana see B&B dads LOVE on their kids, be funny, and not always be the villain
Is that possible?
My 30th birthday celebration has been unBALIevable so far (I’m entering my pun era)
I truly feel so privileged and grateful to have had the opportunity to enter my 30s with 12 incredible people in Bali
Some highlights:
The Hope was one of the first theatres in London that really welcomed me with open arms
They gave me a little commission during lockdown, employed me for a bit, and the team were just generally so supportive
I’m very sad to see why this has happened
Our Spring 2024 season will sadly be the final season of The Hope Theatre in its current incarnation. For more information, see the Board of Trustees' statement:
More wedding spam: The decor 🎃
As Halloween is my fav holiday, it woundn’t be my wedding unless there were spooky vibes 👻
