Usually dramatic depictions of historical periods are emotionally more engaging than documentaries. Even ones with fantastical narratives.
Which is why The Little Mermaid, precisely because it is not a documentary, is so important.

The prince literally references Brazil and other Caribbean countries. The story is magical but it is clearly set in a world and time that did exist. A part of the world and time dominated by slavery. It is setting the story in this time which is problematic.

In what world did mermaids exist? The fact that it has Brazil does not mean it is “our world”. There can be many important critics about media literacy in addressing slavery, but this is truly just a magical tale.
