Seems the cat's out of the bag.... Wednesday is my last day at the Telegraph and next week I'm joining
@POLITICOEurope
's new UK financial services policy desk - slide into my DMs for the usual City goss, scoops, coffee and beers.
So the main hall at

is a ghost town…
But the pro-European
@euromove
fringe event is packed to the rafters.
The times they are a’changing.
@iainmartin1
Trying to score political points over these allegations - where woman allege they were raped and sexually assaulted - is not a great look.
Lee Anderson getting the nod for deputy Tory party chair gives off two vibes:
- Rishi Sunak is trying to keep the right-wing wreckers in the party happy;
- and/or no other MP wanted to do it.
Me thinks it is probably both.
@SarahChampionMP
You are disgusting. This tweet is disgusting.
@Keir_Starmer
should remove your whip. You don’t deserve one vote from women in this country.
Bit of a job update - after 4 great years at
@Citywire
I'm joining the
@Telegraph
in a few weeks as a senior reporter.
Continue to slide into my DMs for stories, scoops, abuse, shit chat and the like.
All the Premiers who locked Australians out of their own country during the pandemic are now gone.
#StrandedAussies
Yet Australia is still not brave enough to hold a proper inquiry into its China-style Zero Covid response, with
@AlboMP
exempting states' decisions from scrutiny.
'I don't want to see Prince Harry destroy the industry that I love.'
@RachelSJohnson
argues that the Duke of Sussex 'goading the press into humiliating payouts' is a lose-lose situation for both him and the media.
This is excellent (from Lewis), and also mind numbingly selfish, ignorant and xenophobic at the same time (from the caller). No wonder nothing gets built here.
“You’re a hypocrite! You just want to build, build, build."
“You are pulling the ladder up. That’s what you’re doing."
“We don’t want two billion people in the UK!"
@Lewis_Goodall
and caller Jonathan have a ‘spirited discussion’ about NIMBYism and house-building…
UPDATE: The Foreign Office has tonight been forced to correct major mistakes in a minister's speech to parliament about the removal of British Council contractors from Afghanistan.
Story here:
The police have no right to dictate editorial policy.
Next they'll be telling the media not to cover murders and response times because it will reval the force is incompetent.
Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd now turns his fire on
@LBC
.
"Your editorial policy needs to reflect on whether or not we want to be part of the problem, which is how Just Stop Oil manage to get their message out there so very successfully."
Pretty sure it's because of massive wealth inequality in Britain, especially outside of London, and that has increased over the last 10 years - as the data in the piece reveals.
We've reached the stage of MPs spouting dangerous conspiracy theories they don't really believe in to win votes from the "silent majority" - the UK needs a general election, and soon.
Here’s our interview with
#andrewbridgen
for
@bbcemt
the first he has given since suspension from Conservative Parliamentary party following an anti vax tweet. Put it to him that he
removed the offending holocaust tweet so he must have known he had gone too far.
Good lesson for Britain: Australia went through the same awful immigration policies for years. Then the UN & human rights bodies said they were illegal, Aus paid huge fines, and now scrapped. Harsh immigration policies don't work.
First day at

For balance, my friend…The Prime Minister is WRONG not to go to COP. Global warming is the biggest crisis facing our planet and net zero creates many 1000s of jobs which is good for the economy. COP in Glasgow was most successful ever… but don’t expect media to report that
Jadon Sancho, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford being racially abused on social media. And this is why

players will continue to take a knee. Also, Twitter and Instagram have to be quicker and stronger to stop these hate crimes on their platforms.
@MrHarryCole
Truss and supporters have been speaking out about the state of other economies to divert blame from the mini-Budget. Make up your mind over who can and can't comment.
So....Isabel Oakeshott helped Hancock write his book, got all the details and cashed her cheque - then sat on the Whatsapp msgs for ages - and now releases them as an exclusive. Righto.
@DPJHodges
@WhatFletchSaid
Mate. Open safe routes and processing centers (as a majority of people are found to be genuine asylum seekers) then deport the ones that aren't genuine. Isn't hard.
Not only did it take the Home Sec almost 24 hours to denounce the awful riot by the far-right, she also managed to blame the asylum seekers for it at the same time - pretty appalling imo.
I condemn the appalling disorder in Knowsley last night. The alleged behaviour of some asylum seekers is never an excuse for violence and intimidation. Thank you to
@merseypolice
officers for keeping everyone safe.
Like...if I was running a Gov't trying to avoid comparisons with 1930s Germany, I probably wouldn't do things reminiscent of the Gov't in 1930s Germany.
@Tonisenior
In 2010, some bloke stole my phone in King's Cross while I was on holiday in London. The Met police not only found it in some clapped out house a week later, but they posted it back to my work office in Sydney. How times have changed.
@rafaeljames78
@BBCLauraKT
@lucyallan
A) you can't spell, and, B) the UK does not take in 500 legal asylum seekers a day. Oh, C) if the Home Office goes ahead with this plan, it will cost tax payers billions.
@BenedictSpence
The World Cup shouldn't be held there in the first place.
Plus, the foreign secretary of the oldest democracy on the planet should do his actual job in promoting decent values, not telling gay people to be...less gay.. so they dont upset a horrible regime.
Excellent read from
@SquigglyRick
and highlights what a shit fight the NDIS is while being managed by the Libs/NDIA. Surplus my arse.

Scott Morrison (let alone Bob Hawke and pretty much every other PM) sank beers at sporting events every year and crickets from the Telegraph. Desperate stuff, this.

If Boris Johnson fails to get 100 endorsements, every MP that has backed him will have their credibility shred further.
Johnson's rumoured entry into the fray has split the Tory party even more that it was already. Grim.
A statement:
The Home Secretary attended an event last night and took questions, including on immigration policy.
Footage of a conversation with a holocaust survivor is circulating online. The video has been heavily edited and doesn’t reflect the full exchange.

could lose its longstanding immunity to civil lawsuits brought on by consumers/investors after a group of MPs tabled an amendment to the Treasury's flagship Financial Services & Markets Bill.
There are two reasons why the UK economy is stagnating: Brexit & Tory infighting.
Why on earth would foreign investors back Britain when there is nothing but Conservative instability. Massive self-own.

It's...totally expected but also the reason the UK has gotten into this mess in the first place: papers and talking heads backing whoever because they're told too, despite the obv faults.
The Liz Truss piece in the Tele is so extraordinarily stupid. She blames HMT, markets, civil servants & OBR, but her and Kwarteng blocked the OBR, sacked Treasury officials and ignored warnings re policies from markets, industry and civil servants.
Waleed totally misses the point once again. So, if a young person uses this scheme, they then have to sell their house to fund their retirement (assuming they make a profit on said house). It's batshit policy.
#CostOfLivingCrisis
#auspoll2022
One of the interesting points of the Coalition's super withdrawal scheme is that if you were to sell the home you bought, you would need to pay it back into your account... So is it really just a long-term investment? We ask
@swrighteconomy
.
Speaking to various Government departments this week for a few stories and each and every time a poor press officer says "we have no idea" - there is absolutely zero actual governing happening and hasn't been for months. Chaos.
Aware I'm stating the blindingly obvious, but this cross-party meeting - including prominent Brexiters - just proves the leave ppl had no idea what they were doing, or cared what
#brexit
would do the UK.
I haven't seen this many civil servants in Westminster since the start of the pandemic.
Just a shame they've only come in to stand on a picket line.

It's pretty impressive that in trying to deny claims it used language and policy from the 1930s, the Gov't has pressured the UK broadcaster to censor a presenter that was critical of a controversial immigration policy, which then led to an exodus of other presenters. Top stuff.
The FCA then added that when it received additional info on these cases, it turned out that these accounts were closed because of customer behaviour - eg racist language directed at staff.
The whole model is cooked - the UK is stuck in a doom loop of low public spending and gimmicky policies. Someone needs to come in and do a generational shake up.
@bbclaurak
Chancellor says there won’t be any gimmicks at the Budget…
Also defends the fiscal rules…
“I do want to find a way to bring down the tax burden… in a way that is responsible”
@GuidoFawkes
@JohnRentoul
The OBR's job isn't about growth or policy, that's the government's job. The OBR provides fiscal forecasts and a reality check to government policies.
The FCA said: "With the exception of these cases that would be better categorised as customer behaviour, no cases were reported where an account had been declined, suspended or terminated for the primary reason of ‘expression of political or any other opinions."
This essentially translates to "and I would have got away with it If it wasn't for those pesky Investagive journalists & tax experts" - zero shame or humility.
The Conservative bed-wetting over Labour's Sue Gray appt is funny and predicable: Boris Johnson wasn't brought down over the SG report, it was the Chris Pincher scandal.
The outrage is because she knows where the bodies are buried and how the Tory machine works. Simple.
EXCL: Boris Johnson could strike a deal with Rishi Sunak not to challenge him if he’s given a safe seat at the next election, under plans being considered by the ex-PM’s allies
@MartinDaubney
Maybe the Tory government should have built more houses over the last 12 years? Housing availability has been an issue for a decade, and your paymasters haven't done a thing about it.
