at rates that far exceed the general population. A recent study suggests that mindfulness interventions—a form of exercise for the brain—may help.

I was a grad student. I worked during school. I never expected a bigger stipend or a better job market. I took what I studied and found a way to supply market demand. That's what you get paid for in an economy. The sense of entitlement baffles me.
@caroljsroth
am I wrong here?

How about stipends that include 401k matching, so people can know they might eventually not just get a job but also maybe one day retire?

The thing about mindfulness practice is that it isn’t a 20min a day effort. It’s a moment to moment practice. So it’s easy, and hard at the same time. Bringing the mind back to the moment is the struggle bc the mind enjoys daydreaming, e.g., driving while thinking of a problem.

Also, a lot of the people who go into graduate school tend to be of a wealthy and pampered background (based on my experience). They don't handle challenges well.

This is an achievable goal. However, it would require an industry-wide agreement to lower the number of matriculating PhD students by 50-75%, which (in order for graduate programs to retain critical mass) would mean shutting down the majority of graduate programs.

My blood pressure shot up and/or fluctuated for the first time during the period i started writing the first draft of my PhD thesis. I was then 28-29 yrs old. The seeds of stress were sown for a long time effect!
