“What do you do?”
I’m a historian.
“What kind of history?”
"My dissertation is about not-in-my-backyard politics in wealthy cities and the making of the modern urban housing crisis."
"Oh that's interesting. These developers are putting up terrible condos in my neighborhood."
@JakeAnbinder
lol I have had versions of this conversation many times. Sometimes the people are completely unabashed about it, but my favorite ones are the, "Oh yeah, I completely agree. However, in my neighborhood..."
@JakeAnbinder
But what are the community benefits like?
(Seriously, though, all of us liking this tweet would probably love some recommended reading on the subject!)
@JakeAnbinder
Have you looked into why people want to force density in already dense areas instead of developing locales like Richmond & East Palo Alto?
Because it seems that racism may be playing a role here
It makes environmental sense to build in already established but less dense cities
@JakeAnbinder
At least it's not the convo I overheard yesterday that slid right on into xenophobic blaming of Asian immigration for driving up home prices.

@mateosfo
Don't they know that displacing low-income tenants with condos for the rich -- who may not even occupy them but use them as an investment -- is housing justice?
