11 October 1988. Women began to study at Magdalene College, Cambridge, for the first time. Male students wore black armbands in protest.

@FXMC1957 In 1988? Were the male students being ironic?

@FXMC1957 It would be interesting to know how many are in leading positions in business, politics, etc today.

@FXMC1957 1988! A headline one would have thought dates back to 1888!

@FXMC1957 Went to event there recently. No black armbands these days I’m pleased to say.

@FXMC1957 Oh dear! imagine the absolute horror of having to share space with representatives of half the population of the world, the half that gave birth to them and more than likely helped send them to this bastion of male entitlement in 1988.

@FXMC1957 @EHChalus As someone who was at Cambridge at the time, it depresses me to think that these armband-wearing wankpuffins are probably now married with daughters, possibly influential men in their respective fields. I hope they've grown up a bit too.

@FXMC1957 The Male students who protested should be ashamed. Intelligence & a sense of fair play would demand equal opportunities for the good of society.

@FXMC1957 It would be interesting to hear from those male students: how do they feel about their actions and motives now?

@FXMC1957 @BertaVerd Unbelievable, but explains why #WomenInSTEM is still such a sensitive issue in the UK and other western countries. In USSR feminism was the state policy since 1917. By 1988 Soviet people would know about gender segregation only from historic books (and news from UK apparently :)

@FXMC1957 @EHChalus I remember it. Was a student at Clare at the time. Could not conceive why anyone would want to live as an adult in an all male environment.
