Best Defenders to target for FPL
A Thread
- 2nd half data from
@FFScout
- NPxGI per 90 vs Team xCS per 90
- Marker color shows total mins played
- Marker size shows bonus potential
- You want defenders with high NPxGI (attacking threat) and high CS potential. Likes of Trippier and TAA stand out obviously
- Shows why people are interested in Porro. Top attacking threat
- Chilwell good attacking threat even in a bad season for Chelsea
- Gabriel, TAA, Chiwell, Shaw show good bonus potential. No point for guessing that Trippier shows up very high for bonus potential
- Estupinan, Moreno decent attacking threat, nothing like Trippier/TAA
- Shaw attacking threat overrated although he played a lot of games at CB
Another stat I like to track is xMins (Minutes played per appearance).
- And then my favorite FPL stat: Non-pen expected returns, NPxR. For defenders, NPxR = NpxG + xA + xCS
- NPxR gives a sense of the number of returns you expect from a player
- Plot shows NPxR vs xMins
- Trippier dual threat of attacking returns and good CS potential shows up nicely.
- Likes of TAA, Schar, Porro, Ake look good. Ake mins could be a problem if he gets subbed off early or gets sub on appearances.
Now, I have divided these data into price points.
1. Premium defenders (6-8m)
- TAA good data
- Trippier just elite: Attacking threat, CS potential, bonus potential. His difficult fixtures early season means he is not popular now. But, if Newcastle can sustain their last season performance Trippier will come into discussion again
2. Mid-priced defenders (5-5.5m)
- When Newcastle fixtures get better, Schar may come into discussion
- Porro unreal stats for his price. If he is nailed he will be popular.
- Gabriel, Chilwell, Estupinan good bonus potential
3. Cheap defenders (4-4.5m)
- Botman definitely stands out. Wait for Newcastle good fixtures though
- Palace defenders could be good shout at their price
- Pinnock and Henry similar attacking threat and bonus potential
Conclusions
I hope this data is useful. I wanted to give a good sense of the data and then let people make their own decisions
5-5.5m defenders will be popular. At 4.5m, Palace defenders interesting. Same goes for Brentford - Pinnock and Henry
Use this data along with fixtures

This graphic shows that even at a price point of 6.5 £ Trippier is still worth the money. Not at the start cause of the fixture, but later on, surely !

Absolutely. If Newcastle can sustain their defensive performance from last season, I think Trippier will be an option again when they have good fixtures

Any way of adding a weighting for more points scored by goal instead of assist?
Porro having high chance of goal should rightfully put him much higher than Trippier for ‘attack threat’.
Would also then show Schar and Gabriel strengths better too.

Definitely a good way. I have done this in the past. The results won’t be too dissimilar. Players who get more assists than goals often get more bonus points as well.
