I am so sad that my former postdoc host Barry Sinervo at UCSC has passed away. We worked closely between 1997 and 2009 during and after my postdoc in California, and he shaped both my thinking and that of many other junior colleagues. R.I.P. Barry! Your ideas will live on.

Among the more bizarre recent claims in the work-life balance debate is the strange suggestion that you should not send emails at certain times, out of "respect". Solution: send emails whenever you want. Read them whenever you want. End of discussion.

It amazes me that so many human behavioural geneticists seem completely unaware of the massive body of research on non-human animals showing how heritabilities and genetic effects are often strongly overestimated, unless you use complex breeding designs and careful experiments.

But the genetic contribution to individual differences in e.g. years of education, or income, has been established for decades using twin, adoption & other genetically sensitive study designs. New research using DNA is just (belatedly) bringing this finding to public attention.

If you are a scientist: don't pretend you are "apolitical". Because it is a self-deception and and an illusion. You are always political, whether you admit it or not, as you are not an objective fact-seeking machine, but an organism with built-in biases 12/

10/ As evolutionary biologists interested in phenotypes, I think we should not fall in to the reductionist trap, but be pluralistic and accept that neither "top-down" (phenotypes) or "bottom-up" (molecules) approaches are sufficient, but complementary to each other.

This is an extremely naive view, both philosophically and scientifically. It is true that Gould and Lewontin were political, but they did never hide their views (which they should have credit for), but so was Wilson, even though he never admitted it 7/

Another tiresome article by James Shapiro, propagating myths about the Modern Synthesis and claiming that symbiosis, horizontal gene transfer, transposable genetic elements and genome re-arrangements necessitate major revision of evolutionary theory 1/

Reading Mayr's & Provine's edited volume about the Evolutionary Synthesis and gets reminded about how many biologists have had big problems in accepting and understanding that proximate and ultimate explanations are complementary, not mutually exclusive 1/

My contribution to a Special Issue in @evoecology about "Fitness effects of mutations" is now out in early view. Thx to Charlie Fenster for invite. I discuss the links between mutational pleiotropy, standing genetic variation and mutational pleiotropy:

I also think it is wrong to accuse Wilson for being a racist simply because of his views on human nature, and based on the fact that "Sociobiology" may not have stood the test of time. Arguing that human behaviours are partly genetic does not a priori make one a racist (11/n)

Today, it is 40 years since Gould & Lewontin (1979) published their (in)famous "Spandrels"-article. Here are some revealing quotes about Gould's dishonesty, big ego and obsession to become famous, including one revealing one from his ally Lewontin:

Given the recent discussions on EEB Twitter and (justified) calls to #diversifyEEB , it is striking with the lack of national diversity among participants: it is essentially a discussion where all participants across all camps reside in the US, and to a lesser extent Canada 1/

Happy to get this finally published in @ASNAmNat We combine phenotypic experimental manipulations with phylogenetic comparative methods using a molecular phylogeny of the damselfly genus Ischnura to investigate the function and evolutionary history of a female colour signal 1/

A deeply misleading and highly biased article and an uncritical interview with Masatoshi Nei. It needs to be empasized: it is not mutation OR natural selection, but BOTH. Mutation alone cannot increase organismal adaptation, it needs natural selection:

I really enjoyed this informative video by @zachbbionerd about the history of the Modern Synthesis, its relationship to evolutionary theory at large, what "gene centrism" is (and is not!) and claims that evolutionary biology is a field in crisis:

A self-appointed genius and "geneticist" who thinks that humans are direct descendants from chimpanzees (!). How did this dude become a professor????

Some racial groups such as Khoe-San carry more ancestral alleles (AAF: AA freq), i.e. chimpanzee alleles, and hence less modern than other people in whom the derived alleles are fixed. This makes sense with known traits. But it is a sensitive topic. … 📷

Today it is exactly 25 years since I defended my PhD-thesis on life-history ecology & evolution in Blue Tits. Here is the cover of my thesis and some nice birds i saw today: Wheatear, Tawny Pipit and Wood Lark. Looking forward to the next 25 years of research 😀!

Except you are not a population geneticist @charlesmurray , you are only an ideologically motivated race biologist with a BA in history and a PhD in history. I am not a population geneticist either, but I have probably used much more population genetics methods than you Charles.

1/4 This is why it's so exciting to be a population geneticist these days: Huge questions can be tested and answered. At issue in this case is the timing of evolutionary events, which pertains to Stephen J Gould's pronouncement that human biology hasn't changed since humans
