Some American Blacks (eg Ibrahim X Kelly) assume Arab names to dissociate themselves from Western slavers, blissfully unaware of the fact that the Arab slave trade up the Red Sea started centuries before its Atlantic counterpart, lasted till 1985 (in Sudan) and thrives in Libya
@ELuttwak
The term slave originated from the European Slavic nations that were used as slaves by Romans before Arabs. The same thing happened to Vandalism, driven by vandal German tribes that revolted against Romans for using their women and children for the sex trade.

Remind me why the slave trade thrives in Libya right now. Remind me what recent event occurred that causes the slave trade to now thrive in Libya.
@ELuttwak
It is peculiar to me how little if any attention the Arab slave trade has received culturally. It reminds me of how little attention so-called feminists give to issues in Muslim communities and lands, a notable exception being

They're aware, but even if fictional and backwards, tying yourself to some larger group from whom you hope to grift is a sound idea. The biggest threat to Vietnam's sovereignty has been China. The DRV joined itself at the hip to China for the duration of the 2 Indochinese Wars.
@ELuttwak
You're right of course but overlook that arab slavers in the red sea weren't the ones that trafficked the black Americans ancestors. They're dissociating themselves from what happened to them not what happened on the opposite side of a vast continent.
@ELuttwak
The Barbary slave trade snatched many a European from the Mediterranean coasts.
North Africa still owes Europe many trillion$ in compensation
@ELuttwak
The Arab slave trade emerged in 7th century, 10 centuries before the Atlantic slave trade. It’s estimated that 3/4 of the captured slaves died before they could be sold. Historians estimate that 10 - 18 million people were enslaved by Arabs, including up to 1.25 million Europeans
