@RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @RoryStewartUK Keir Starmer has just said that the NHS hires too many staff from overseas. Considering even with this "too many", the NHS is severely understaffed, has he just given up on the commonsense approach and is just focused on out-Torying the Tories? Because that's a weird statement.

@GideonSaysSo @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @RoryStewartUK Why? Surely he takes the view that it is immoral to entice nurses and doctors here from countries that have trained them and can ill afford to lose them?

@NickWal27726691 @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @RoryStewartUK That's not a moral issue. That's a question of whether you believe people who are trained and skilled should be allowed to chase better economic and financial terms regardless of where they come from. It's a slippery slope to "go back to where you came from" for foreign nhs staff

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret We literally don't have the number of training places to cover our requirement for doctors nurses etc. Therefore to fill vacancies we have no option but to steal trained staff from other countries. Kier has no problem with oversea staff he has problem built in under resourcing

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @GideonSaySo The problem with the NHS hiring so many staff from overseas is that it deprives some countries, with bigger problems than the UK, of much needed healthcare staff. We need properly funded and accessible training facilities for the healthcare professions.

@PetJonVic @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret I'll give an example of where I come from, Nigeria. There doctors are underpaid, going months and years without pay in some cases, with the minister of health being abusive towards them. Those doctors shouldn't have the right to seek better economic opportunities?

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret It could be a moral statement. Train more doctors and nurses from UK esp from disadvantaged backgrounds and stop poaching foreign trained staff often from poor countries with even more serious staff shortages than the UK

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret Difficult to disagree with @Keir_Starmer here. It is morally reprehensible that the UK takes advantage of brightest and best from less developed countries where their skills are desperately needed

@GideonSaysSo @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @RoryStewartUK He's pointing out how the Tories have decimated the UK's ability to train the domestic workforce. He didn't say there was anything wrong with people emigrating to the UK to work. The ending of freedom of movement demonstrated just how badly the Tories have managed the UK

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret A good point, poorly explained is all. We shouldn’t be poaching staff from other countries just to bypass the cost of training our own.

@GideonSaysSo @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret @RoryStewartUK Not weird. The domestic skill base is too low and too few training places are on offer. The approach isn’t ethical as we are taking skilled health workers from developing countries. There can be issues with language, culture and skills assurance.

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret Labour has always had to balance ‘educated’ socially liberal with ‘working class’ socially conservative. Even more important with need to regain ‘Red Wall’. But this was not balance, gets close to dog whistle racism. Starmer needs to do much better.

@GideonSaysSo @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics @campbellclaret It is odd to expect immigrants to work in conditions in #NHS which UK residents will not. The way forward is to improve conditions so we retain more staff and encourage more to enter the professions. Whilst also having a controlled immigration policy.
