What really helped in my career was working as a System Administrator. I wish that I worked as a Software Engineer as well before making the transition to InfoSec but having the System Admin knowledge has been super useful. I still leverage the knowledge to help customers!

@DebugPrivilege @SwiftOnSecurity I had roles as junior/mid-level System Admin, Database Admin (OLTP, DBWH + ETL), Support and Bookkeeping (year 1 accountancy trainee) on my way to becoming a Software Engineer. I could code and code well before I started. Been extremely helpful in my career..

@DebugPrivilege Same here mate. Helped me in many situations, especially to quickly map the infrastructure I’m testing when I get the initial foothold during offensive operations. Right now working on the dev side since is becoming a must-have skillset.

@DebugPrivilege I also come from sysadmin background. I really enjoyed the times I had to code stuff in Python, Perl and BASH. I wish I had learned Object-Oriented programming

@DebugPrivilege Great advice! I think help desk positions are greatly undervalued as well. If you want to see how people use and interact with tech, sit on a help desk for a few hours.
