Mowalola is facing backlash for her latest show at LFW. Her collection featured mini skirts with prints of flags including the flag of Saudi Arabia. It’s controversial as the flag contains the Islamic shahada (testimony) which is sacred to Muslims and shouldn’t be worn this way.…
Some popular Arab and Muslim fashion accounts are starting a campaign to ask FarFetch to stop selling Mowalola or face a boycott. FarFetch has not responded yet. It’s important to note that Middle Eastern customers make up a large number of their customers.
Although there are a large number of respectful posts asking her to take down the designs. There are also a lot of racist and vile tweets about her. Her twitter mentions are filled with trolls. It’s disappointing to see but I’m not surprised. She addressed those comments as well.

Just don’t get why these designers wanna be controversial so bad regardless of how disrespectful. This isn’t the creativity they think it is.

Top is also an Umbro rip off. There are people who can’t afford to put good, considered fashion on the runway and yet these people are accessing the platform and the space….
@CoutureIsBeyond
I thought the reason it was controversial was bc it featured the flag of a vile oppressive theocracy that k1lls gay ppl, and oppresses women
But no, apparently its bc it offends their religious sensibilities
Ok and? Religious sensibilities are not the same as racism or bigotry
@CoutureIsBeyond
Fashion has always referenced religion, both to pay homage to it and to protest it. You’re free to practice your religion but that doesn’t mean everyone else has to obey your rules. We always see Christianity used in fashion, why do we selectively chose when we care about this?
