Have always taught runners to stare at the first baseman's feet when running to first base. Their feet will tell you exactly what is happening.

@ButchBaseball29 I like this a lot!! Same for watching the pitcher feet when leading off (RHP).

@ButchBaseball29 First thing I learned as an 18 yo 1st base coach my first summer coaching...my job was to collect batting gloves and yell, “Feet, Feet, Feet!” on balls in the infield. There’s a lot more to coach 1B than that, but a take away that has never left me.

@ButchBaseball29 Just make sure your clear with any aspiring ‘Manny Machados’ that the feet are not a target

@ButchBaseball29 This is interesting and mentally I don’t see any issue ... well some kids/players still don’t understand to run through the bag (base for you youngsters)

@ButchBaseball29 Awesome thought. Never thought about that before. Thanks! I have thought through some potential scenarios and what the feet would be doing. Can you give me a few examples you use to teach. Would love to learn from you about this. Thanks

@ButchBaseball29 Totally agree, have found that too many young players stare at the base. It hasn't moved in over a hundred years! No info there. The 1b feet has the info.

@ButchBaseball29 The great 1st basemen often have terrific footwork. Nothing better than seeing a LH 1B switch feet on a ball thrown backhand side of the base. Sadly it seems that there are now more RH 1B than lefties, not sure why either.
