Star Trek is NOT SOCIALIST. If you think Star Trek was socialist, you didn’t understand Star Trek.
Technologically has progressed to a post-scarcity society on some places like earth. But, there’s private property ownership (Sisko’s restaurant, Picard’s Vineyard.) There’s…
@BriannaWu
Ok it's more of a social democracy than anything else. But we are way past the days where Klingons were Communism allegories, so the Federation's economic framework is sorta up to interpretation.

It really is, you can’t just cherry pick one instance (DS9) which of course shows an area where different cultures and non federation rules apply. Please just explain how in other treks that money doesn’t even exist and basic needs are met.

There's an entire episode about how great unions are. Humans explicitly don't use money. Sisko's greatest human enemy's favorite object is a literal dollar.

@beemerw21
Deep Space 9 is about challenging the ideals of the Federation when you go to the fringes of that civilization and they are forced to deal with local powers and existential threats.
It's not really a commentary on socialism or capitalism specifically.
@BriannaWu
@beemerw21
DS9 had one of the main characters give one of Marx's books to help a character understand what a union was and why they're important

Star Trek economics is Federation ppl don’t have to work at all for all basic needs met. Anticapitalist themes are found all over ST series. Picard states point blank Federation citizens are not paid for work, Sisko’s kids tells Nog he has no money bc he is Federation citizen

There’s a plot point where the station commander notes that the Federation is not charging the bar owner any rent for his leased space, as that is not a Federation value. DS9 is about how a post-scarcity society deals with neighbors who do not live under their utopian system.
@BriannaWu
@beemerw21
1/ The Federation is utopian space communism with some dark institutions (Section 31, I’m looking at you.) Bajor is, but for some internal crises, basically a not-secular but still mostly social democratic to democratic socialist regime (unlike the Federation, they have money
@BriannaWu
@beemerw21
remember the time Sisko threatened to finally charge Quark rent? because rent was free because it was managed by the federation...
also the episode Bar Association where Rom is quoting Marx and O'brien is pushing him on due to his family legacy of union men...

@beemerw21
You're saying "star trek" isn't socialist, but you've picked a show which showcases MANY different governments.
The Ferengi are pretty well purely capitalist. To every fault of that system.
