It’s one thing to make an observation about a player’s tactics. Entirely different to call them “ludicrous”. Does he find it ludicrous when Rafa or Stan return that deep? Or is it possible, on a lightning-fast court, Thiem needs more time/space to produce his 1-hander?

To be fair, tennis writers wouldn’t be tennis writers if they weren’t at least a bit tactically knowledgeable. This is a reasonable critique of Thiem’s return position. With the awesome forehand he has, he could be absolutely pummeling those serves.

We all play tennis. It is completely in his wheel house to call out why a player of his level is standing so far back against an 88mph serve. Analysts do it. You’re hurt about something. Why engage?

Hurt? No indeed.
You actually made my point for me. “Analysts do it”. Ben is not an analyst. Former pro players & coaches are analysts. He is a writer. Like I said, it’s perfectly reasonable to make an observation about tactics. Completely out of line to call them “ludicrous”.

Ben is secretly angry on any player who didn't spit on Djokovic and Adria tour and now this new players organization. That's so obvious!
