The Heat’s 2-2-1 press and 2-3 zone really turned things around for them in the 4th quarter of game 2
Playing zone against that Denver lineup is a dangerous game, but their unconventional principles bothered them just enough
Quick thread:
Starts out in the press, as they flow into the half-court zone
Couple things to watch:
- Whichever low man has the empty corner can cheat up to fill gaps
- Got Denver away from their PnR immediately
- Now just watch Gabe Vincent battle with Jokic in the middle of the floor
Same thing here, but now watch the communication on the weak-side
Lowry can cheat up again due to his blank zone, but then Bam and him start calling everything out
Gabe continues to battle positionally and forces the offensive foul
Now Caleb Martin is the one battling with Jokic in the middle and look at the job he does
Bam anchoring down low covers a lot up
Also Duncan is just super comfortable within the zone and always seems to be in the correct spots
Caleb cuts off Brown, forces a tough shot
Jimmy Butler in the game, and he finds himself at the top of the zone
And here’s why there are so many moving parts
Jokic gets the screen to find empty space, but Caleb slides over to fill
Lowry slides up to fill as well, forcing MPJ to rise
Butler contests off the kick
Now here’s the other part of this
As the Heat’s full court pressure gets more annoying, now Jokic is getting an entry pass with 14 seconds left on the shot clock
Turns into a turnover, but speeding up their half court play is crucial
Now here’s the final instance where Murray gets to his spot, mostly since Butler/Martin miss their opportunity to switch at the top of that zone
Bam covers up for a controversial block/goaltend, but the point is that they got Denver away from their usual comfort spots

You’ve got a great eye, Brady. I’m a 44 year old basketball-head and your attention to detail on calling out the right coverages and different factors that lead to winning basketball games is impressive.
And not impressive for your age…just straight-up impressive.
