So, we’re asking for your help to do some much needed improvements to their space & to bolster our food supply.
If you’re able to help with our spring fundraiser, Hazel would be very grateful…and so will I.
I have to go through metal detectors every time I want to go to a hockey game in NYC.
And when I have jury duty.
And when I needed to get an NYC ID at the municipal building.
These people complaining need to get out more.
The horses of two of the biggest trainers in the game were injured yesterday in front of an enormous audience. Both of them have provided regular updates, on their own and others' social media accounts. This wasn't happening even five years ago. It's a positive and welcome change
Savage! 👏👏👏
“Then, just before the 2020 presidential election, Mulvaney showed the world what an astute pundit he could one day become when he predicted in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece that his former boss would act like a statesman if he lost the election to Joe Biden”
“‘I was trying to get to her, and security wouldn’t let me,’ he said in Spanish, before continuing in English. ‘I told them, “She’s my horse!”’”
Despite heartbreak, Alejandro Alarçon is exactly where he wants to be: with the horses.
When I was going through cancer treatment, Rick Violette texted and e-mailed me regularly, a kindness that touched me profoundly. An inestimable loss to his family, his friends, his barn, the industry.
Earlier today, Twisted Tom in his 42nd start. He was claimed by

Just got a message from
@nodaracing
: T Loves a Fight has been retired. He’ll be on a farm for a few months, then work as the barn’s stable pony.
I am touched beyond words that
@nodaracing
got in touch to tell me. From day 1, Orlando, Melani, & their crew have welcomed me.
Silver lining: As horses come into the stretch at Saratoga, the main sound you hear is the grooms standing outside the winner's circle, cheering their horses home.
If Kendrick Carmouche retains mount on Bourbonic in the Kentucky Derby, it would be of historic significance regardless of where the horse finishes, given the paucity of Black jockeys in the Derby over the last century, following their dominance in the race in the 19th century
“I decided that, from now on, I would have the track photographer add the Groom’s name to any future Winner’s Circle photos of my horses.”
I wonder how many owners know the names of the people that take care of their horses.
Robert Frost once said that a good poem “begins in delight and ends in wisdom.” I believe that is how “The Real Players Inside The Backstretch” has affected me.
What began as a delight by following their posts, and hearing the wonderful stories of the backstretch workers that…
Javier Castellano said jockeys had no idea that the Runhappy signs were going to be on the turf & he thought they could be a danger to the horses. He told the outrider, who called the stewards.
Way too many people okayed this without talking to the people most affected by it
The responses to this tweet are all the evidence you need for why Pride is necessary.
Actions are more important than symbols, but symbols are important, too.
(And: I wish that NYRA had also acknowledged Juneteenth)
Given the climate (sorry) around racing now, and though it would be a logistical nightmare, cancelling racing in NY would have to be seen as a huge PR win, even if the Belmont Stakes has to be moved. If we care about the health of the humans and horses, it's a no-brainer.
Like this tweet if you're a fan/employee/gambler and would consider yourself more on the nerdy side than on the cool side.
(If you don't want to out yourself as a nerd, you can DM me)
A block up from the track, a protest that Sean Spicer is presenting the trophy for today’s stakes. A company that relies on immigrant labor chooses to honor someone who represented a man who demonizes immigrants. Good for you, protestors.
If you spent any time in the Saratoga paddock over the last decade or so, you no doubt talked to Leroy Clement. He died last year, and today, his family came to the track to honor with him a race. Today's 7th.
So
@DRFLivingston
,
@ponyace
,
@SarahKAndrew
, & I decided that little TAP needed to meet his namesake. So Timothy went a little field trip this morning to meet
@PletcherRacing
. No better sport than TAP the human, who was far more cooperative than TAP the feline.
Heartbroken after my Sandy rescue
@bklynrocky
died unexpectedly yesterday. 9 years is way too short to be with him, but he was adored, & not many cats can say they were babysat in the Aqueduct press office. Will always❤️
@Hennigracing
&
@RHennig00
for bringing him into my life
Will never get tired of seeing
@MaggieWolfndale
suspend her prodigious professional aplomb to celebrate in the winner's circle when one of their horses wins. What a purely joyous sight.
Currently in a FB conversation in which people are more upset about the possibility of protests/boycott at the Kentucky Derby than they are about Breonna Taylor's death. This is why we say
#BlackLivesMatter
...because some people think a horse race matters more.
Today's incident shows, again, the value of local news.

leading the coverage this morning of the allegations against Chad Brown.
They know the people in the courts. They know the system.
Support local journalism. Don't bitch about paywalls.
Said Stinson: “These grooms are the most unsung heroes in the sport. They do all the work, they’re with them all the time, & I just think when a horse wins a race the guy that does the hard work ought to walk the horse in.”
We also need owners who aren't willing to look the other way, and who are willing to give horses to lower-percentage trainers, and who would refuse to let their horses be treated like this.
Today has been a day of thoughts and reflections and the main one is how much help we need as an industry. We clearly can not regulate or police it properly and the Federal Agents have shown us this today. Today is a monumentally sad day, but a day we needed badly.
Taking a knee:
White people: not an acceptable form of protest
Peaceful demonstrations:
White people: not an acceptable form of protest
Refusing to play:
White people: not an acceptable form of protest
White kid shoots protestors.
White people: Self-defense!
As
@ponyace
has pointed out several times, this is the 30th anniversary of Julie Krone's Belmont Stakes win. And now Jena Antonucci becomes the first woman trainer to win.
Forgot to mention this earlier in the day. It is so, so quiet at Saratoga: no ads, no handicapping, nothing over the PA except Imbriale's racecall and announcements.
But at 17 minutes to post, the bell still rings. And it sounds even more amazing amid all the silence. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I saw my parents yesterday for the first time since February, and for us, that's a long time. We stayed outside and six feet apart, and I wore my mask most of the time. I've been talking to them regularly, but still...it was so, so good to see them.
Meet Timothy Alfalfa Pletcher, named by
@SarahKAndrew
&
@ponyace
, born in a
@PletcherRacing
Saratoga hayloft.
I’m going on a reconnaissance mission later today to try to find his mother and sibling. Wish me luck. I’ve never been in a hayloft.
A freelancing friend of mine was offered a pot of money & all-expenses-paid trip to work at the Saudi Cup.
She turned it down. Proud to be friends with someone who sticks by her values, even when it means eschewing personal gain.
The country that denies basic rights to women, is one of the worst countries in the world for LGBTQ people, & recently had a journalist murdered. Please, US racing, stand up & realize that grotesque purse money isn’t everything.
People who follow me on Twitter already knew this. 😜
But seriously, ❤️ you,
@drflivingston
, for this photo and everything else you do. So happy you're my friend.
One year ago yesterday,
@BklynBckstretch
went in for a routine mammogram. Although she'd no doubt have preferred a clean test that day, we know now even more now what we already knew about her: T Loves a Fight.
That poor 2yo filly that got loose & ran down the highway? She was in the barn at Ellis that caught fire.
She must think this horse racing thing is for the birds.
“…if Migliore had played pro QB, third base or point guard, he’d be among the most cherished sports analysts in history.
“[He] continues to hold even the mildly interested with interesting touts, assessments and stories by blending chart with heart”
How lucky we were to have Marylou Whitney with us on all those Whitney days, & how lucky Saratoga's backstretch workers were to have her & John Hendrickson's support. Years ago, she stopped holding her summer gala & instead funded a backstretch program that she regularly attended
It's really rather nice to be watching a Big Day of Racing broadcast that is really all about the racing and not about hats and cocktails and celebrities.
"When you’re ready to make changes in your life, all the pieces fall into place to make it happen for you.” Yeah, yeah, she's got
@Gatorkitten
. But that's not all, not by a longshot.
Fantastic moment at King Abdullah Aziz racetrack when Lisa Allpress won the first race to involve women in the history of Saudi racing with a canny ride up the rail to beat Olivier Peslier

If the coronavirus had hit three years ago, when I was in cancer treatment, I likely wouldn't have been leave my apartment because my immune system was so compromised. Lots of people out there in that position--so be mindful when you talk about this "not being a big deal."
John Velazquez, jockey of Travers winner Code of Honor: "The signs on the turf course were a new thing. We definitely can't do anything like that in a big race. We had no clue. We don't want the horses to be surprised when we're running. Put them down and be safe."
