NATO grounded not in text, not even in the integrated command structure. It’s grounded in the certain knowledge of ‘all for one and one for all’. Trump is taking a sledge hammer to the Alliance’s credibility. Putin’s dream candidate.

The crowd looks enthused as Trump brags about telling NATO allies that he would not defend them if Russia attacked

What will ‘Europe’ do in 12 months’ time if It is left standing alone to defend itself? Minor, subsidiary question: what will Ireland chose to do/say?

Nor is Trump the aberration he was once thought to be… he is at the apex/culmination of long marginalized political currents in the US. Will the Republic stand?

@Bentonra Isn’t his basic point correct? If Europe will not pay for its own defence, why would we expect the US to do so?

@LiamRoche4 Burden sharing always an issue… Europe never pulled its weight… but never has a US President or likely President, questioned the basic principle of NATO collective defence.

@Bentonra What will Europe do? Europe will continue paying for US energy, US weapons and US innovation while it tries to regulate its way out of subservience.

@Bentonra On the contrary. Trump exposed European leaders who loved to talk about security & defence, about threats real & imaginary, coming at them from everywhere in the world but did not want to invest but let US taxpayers pay for their defence. He was proven correct on Germany.
