Actually
@NidaKirmani
is not wrong here. In United India Muslims would have been more than twice their current numbers, majorities in two big provinces (bigger than UP), and further majorities in 3 more. Would not have been easy for Hindutva to come into power. But it’s past now.
@BangashYK
@NidaKirmani
How did they come into power in 1937? Also, see how in 1946's provincial elections congress was able to rob the Gov formation from Muslim League in Punjab despite the fact ML had won 75 out of 84 seats reserved for Muslims.

Having said that, If you hold a referendum today in Pakistan just for opinion sake, those who would prefer that Pakistan should've remained part of India would be represented by negligible amount of Yes of total responses. Pakistan, for the good or bad, was naturally inevitable.

@NidaKirmani
I don’t think most Pakistanis, Indians or Bangladeshis would want anything else. All have a fear (real and imagined) of each other and hence they are separate countries.
@BangashYK
@NidaKirmani
Let’s not forget- assumptions are mother of all screw ups. Also, people voted for these borders, Jinnah didn’t draw them up. East Pakistan remained around its borders as a Bangladesh even after breaking up from west. It’s irrelevant to conjecture on history
@fjriwlpq
There is a difference between a 12% minority and a 35% minority. Also I said “wouldn’t have been easy”which doesn’t mean impossible. It’s sheer guesswork either way really.
@BangashYK
Yaqoob, you are the historian - and a very good one at that - but precisely for that reason the reductive argument you are presenting here needs to be reconsidered.
@ejazhaider
All im saying is that the numbers equation being vastly different would have led to different results. Tweak some variables, and it could have led to a civil war or the emergence of a super power. A futile discussion tho I think as it’s all conjecture at this stage.
@BangashYK
@NidaKirmani
So you know better than Allama Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah; who lived through the experiences of a united India and how treacherous it was for Muslims to be considered equals?
@BangashYK
@NidaKirmani
Both you and Nida should be given to re-write history or join Muslims in India so that Hindutva ideology can be averted—our academia needs some refreshing courses I suppose
@BangashYK
@NidaKirmani
As historian Ayesha Jalal rightly said, there could never have been three generations of Nehruvian dynasty rule were it not for the creation of Pakistan which effectively halved the population of the Indian muslim.
