Column: Mariners reported to be No. 1 in MLB operational profit in 2022. In 2023, they failed to fund offensive improvement, as Yanks series showed. When will it be the right time to fund a complete team?

@Art_Thiel Acting like money matters. The players on the field matter. Money spent doesn't necessarily translate to better players. And free agents can choose which city to play, so the opportunities to improve through free agency are not always what they seem.

@Art_Thiel In the mid-2000’s I was employed with a well known publicly traded communications company. I was doing field work for them, and requested a new piece of safety equipment from the manager. He mentioned that it would be about a month until it was replaced because the fiscal year…

@Art_Thiel As a lifelong Mariners fan you can’t argue this….they operate like they want to be good, not great.

@Art_Thiel This goes back as far as the inception of the 'new' franchise in 1977. Same questions were posed when they had Randy, Edgar, Tito, Bone, and ARod all on the same squad. If the past is any indicator of future behavior, answer is: they won't.

@Art_Thiel As long as fans continue to show up and buy merchandise, the pressure to win is next to nothing. The Seattle Mariners have been doing this for decades. Sign a couple of flashy contracts and act like they want to win. They broke their playoff drought, so all the pressure is off

@Art_Thiel Ownership has proven for decades that they want to be profitable, not a winner. It's maddening as a fan to see reports like this knowing the money is there to make us great but we refuse to use that money. Ownership slogan: refuse to use

@Art_Thiel “Entering Thursday’s games, the Mariners were 28th in batting average (.228), 25th in slugging (.381) and 25th in OPS (.689)” I wonder why ART doesn’t show their rank in “runs”. it breaks his narrative. If you have to hide meaningful data, you have failed as a journalist.
