There are vengeful boarding school staff, addicts seeking fresh starts, ghosts delighting grief-stricken partners, and secret dangerous loves.
I OFFICIALLY HAVE A LITERARY AGENT 😭
Super excited to sign with Carolyn Forde
@Cforde_litagent

@TransLitAgency

2023 has been deeply kind.
My debut short story collection was accepted for publication by Arsenal Pulp Press with a $10,000 advance.
A month later, I was named an
@RBC
Fiction Prize finalist and got to read one of my stories to a room full of writers, agents, and editors.
Deeply thankful to share that I'm a finalist for the $10,000
@RBC
Bronwen Wallace Short Fiction Prize, organized by
@writerstrust

You can read my shortlisted story at
Black writers, need to pay for your MFA application? Or a contest fee to your favorite sci-fi journal? I got you covered in 2023.
Takes ten seconds to send a request via .
Several opportunities already sponsored in the last two days. Room for more.
Yesterday, I saw the initial cover designs for my upcoming short story collection. Didn't expect to be so overwhelmed. This book is real. Years of work is paying off. Materializing. Somehow, I still can't believe it.
So, so honored to be the winner of the 2021 Austin Clarke Fiction Prize. Still hasn't fully sunk in.
It's my first contest win. The story was incredibly difficult to write and means the world to me. I hope you check it out.

Contract finalized and it's official: licensed one of the stories from my upcoming collection into a film, to be produced by Kosa Akaraiwe next spring. Super excited for this new creative collab.
It's pub day! My debut short story collection, Perfect Little Angels, is out in 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇦 today. Sitting on bookshelves in stores. Shipping from warehouses to cozy new homes. If you pre-ordered a copy, thank you. It'll be with you soon.
Thrilled to end April with an acceptance from
@flashfroglitmag
!
Also thankful to
@SmokeLong
for the workshop that generated the initial version of this piece.
BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from MIT.
Those four years dramatically changed the trajectory of my personal and professional life. My first robot. My first internship. My first snowman (predictably named Olaf). My first queer haven. Finally, safe to fall in love.
My book's advanced reading copy arrived in the mail today. It's the first time I got to hold it, and it's almost bizarrely overwhelming. Like all my plans for various errands just went out the window. I'm a couch potato caressing the pages.
Received a Best of the Net nomination from
@SmokeLong
!!
It's my 2nd Best of the Net nom this month, following
@PsmokeJournal
's. Extremely grateful to
@Christopher_All
and the editorial team for the love & faith they've shown "My Americanah".

A whole lot more to share in the near future, and I can't wait!
Honored to receive my 5th Pushcart Prize nom from
@FracturedLit
for my apocalyptic flash, birthed from a
@SmokeLong
workshop.
This beloved piece starts with biblical rapture (rudely) interrupting a fellatio session & ends with a bloody, romantic dance on a bed of stones.
My author's website is up. It was pretty damn fun to make.
It includes a community section showcasing some of my fav short stories by other writers, plus monthly funding opportunities for Black writers (journal contest fees, MFA applications etc).
"I like my men damaged, their cracks like mirrors."
Thrilled to have a new story up at
@FracturedLit
, full of queer lust & deep repressions. Thankful to
@TommyDeanWriter
and
@CoCo4AfroPuffs
for this opportunity.
Some bookstores got copies of my debut collection early, so readers are starting to receive their pre-orders. Seeing this in my inbox today has me all the way in my feelings.
The 2021
#CWprize
shortlist is finally here. Congratulations to the 25 writers selected from a record 6423 submissions!
Many thanks to the judges and readers who made this happen, and to everyone who entered.
Meet the writers here:
Excited to have a new story accepted by
@FracturedLit
for publication in October: a complicated romance unfolding amidst a bloody, Biblical apocalypse. It'll also mark my second time appearing in Fractured Lit!
My 2nd Pushcart Prize nomination this month!!
So grateful to
@flashfroglitmag
and
@EricScotTryon
for giving "Nomad" such a wonderful home. And to the
@SmokeLong
workshop where this piece was first conceived.
My book "Perfect Little Angels" from
@ArsenalPulp
is just months away! 3rd round of book edits in progress. Some incredible authors currently reading it for blurbs (which is exciting & so nerve-wracking). Cover + interior layout design finalized. Excited to share more soon!
Issue 76 is here. It's beautiful. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our Guest Editor
@wrefinnej
, staff, readers in residence, artists, contributors, and everyone who reads, supports and submits to us. You are what makes SmokeLong special.
It's almost 3am here, so I have to go to sleep. But that means interrupting the 100-page streak of
@eloosunde
's Vagabonds! that I've savored for the last few hours. What a thrillingly imaginative novel; what a beautiful new way to rediscover Nigeria. Excited for more tomorrow!
Grateful to appear on this
@MastersReview
shortlist!
My story explores the aftershock of tarnished love, violence, deception, codependency, low self-worth, and financial desperation. Grateful to
@PsmokeJournal
and
@WendyEWallace1
for originally giving it a home.
We are pleased to finally be able to share this shortlist of fifteen courageous, devastating and powerful short stories and essays. Congratulations, shortlisters!

My chaotic short story "Tangerine Therapy", rooted in the markets of my childhood, was accepted by
@splitlipthemag
and will go live on their beautiful website in a few months! Did a lil 3-second celebration dance🕺
Thrilled to have a new piece up on
@flashfroglitmag
about grief & religious fervor & demon-expelling priests.
Grateful to
@EricScotTryon
for the home, to
@DaeganLunsford
for the gorgeous art, and to
@SmokeLong
for the workshop where this first bloomed.
"The boy’s voice rose, his blade slashing air."
Date night goes horribly wrong in my newest story, available now in
@PsmokeJournal
's Spring 2022 issue. Thank you
@WendyEWallace1
for giving this piece such a lovely home.
I hope you check it out:
@matthieuwil_
@KekePalmer
Taste, because how did she paint the withering of a decades-long marriage in minutes? 😭 That song is actually one of my worst fears about relationships. Not some dramatic scandal, but the other simply slowly losing interest/passion over time.
Got an essay forthcoming with
@thenewquarterly
in Spring 2024. My first time really writing about my experience as a software engineer (6 years this month, wtf is time). Its complicated relationship with my writing. And a little bit about feeling lost, but also hopeful.
Spending this Christmas season in Nigeria for the first time in years, re-bonding deeply with my siblings. It's a bit sad reflecting on the familial void that a necessary diaspora creates. The kind that you can't digitally compensate for.
Deeply excited to expand on the narrative world and background characters of my debut short story collection through the eyes of these deeply talented writers.
Returning to
@FracturedLit
with a new piece featuring a biblical apocalypse, bewitching flutes, and my favorite opening sentence to any of my stories. Grateful to
@CoCo4AfroPuffs
and team for publishing this one.
Surprise yourself with the kind of stories you write. Find yourself in characters so unlike you. And when the words stop flowing, it's okay to step away. Even if away is a while. Fall in love with new books.
"Thematically, Perfect Little Angels is concerned with the bounds of empathy."
It was a pleasure to discuss my upcoming book, the angst of seeking publication, the paradox of validation, weird birds, and community with the incredible
@FinnianBurnett
.
So much gratitude to Francesca Ewkuyasi, Helen Elaine Lee,
@wrefinnej
,
@kimmagowan
,
@Christopher_All
, and
@dpmasca
who read and generously blurbed Perfect Little Angels. These are writers I so deeply admire, and their engagement with my stories meant the world to me.
🧵
@sassygayroot
I'm specifically gatekeeping the part after "but I never planned on you changing your mind" with the long pause and a heartbreaking downtrodden "Soooooo I'll go sit on the floor wearing your clothes."
Excited to share a book trailer for my debut story collection, Perfect Little Angels, just a few weeks away from release now (!!!) with
@ArsenalPulp
.
If you can, I hope you pre-order a copy:
Nominated today for Best of the Net by
@PsmokeJournal
!!
This story tackles violence, ambition in the face of poverty, and the comforts of severe codependency. Grateful to
@WendyEWallace1
and the Peatsmoke fiction team for the love they've shown it ❤️
In service to "Perfect Little Angels", I donated 100% of my Austin Clarke Fiction Prize (1000 CAD) + transaction costs to
@OutRightIntl
. They aim to influence changes in laws discriminating against LGBT+ folks in Nigeria et al. The subjugated nature of our existence must shift.
So, so honored to be the winner of the 2021 Austin Clarke Fiction Prize. Still hasn't fully sunk in.
It's my first contest win. The story was incredibly difficult to write and means the world to me. I hope you check it out.
Last month, for the first time in ~3 years, my submittable queue was empty. I was working a ton, inching along on a novel, reading, socializing, surviving. This month, though, I managed to send out a couple new stories. No matter the outcome, it feels great to see "in-progress".
Thank you
@isaurarenwrites
and
@TaylorByas3
for the new acceptance on Issue 10 of
@perhappened
. This story is so dear to my heart, so fractured and tortured, and I'm excited to see it land next month.
Long-term love, endless liquor, a dark alleyway, an enchanted mirror.
Excited to have a new flash story up in
@The_Rumpus
, paired with several incredible pieces of art.
Beyond thrilled to have my short story, "The Smallness of Asking" published in the September issue of
@splitlipthemag
. I'm so proud of it, and it was such a joy working with Split Lip!
Woke up this morning to a thrilling acceptance from
@trampset
! This biblical reimagination was tons of fun to write, and I can't wait to share it in January!
Added to this 🔥 lineup is
@AniokeVincent
whose “Mother’s Keeper” is a brilliant retelling of Genesis that may alter ur worldview 🤯. We’re so damn excited for these authors coming ur way, for the new year, for words!
Received a 2022 Best Microfiction nom for "Lovers".
It was also nominated for a 2022 Pushcart Prize, my third Pushcart nom this year. Grateful for all the love my writing has received from its publishers, for such wildly different stories. Thank you
@nationalflashfd
This week's diary entry is "Holy Ghost" by
@adedayo_agarau
. In his usual brilliant style, a moment of violent sacrilege is rendered with lyrical, poetic devastation.
🎵 The songs of "Perfect Little Angels", melodies for these characters at a charged moment in time, are currently available to stream on various platforms 🎵
Financial support form for Black Writers is open for September. Realizing just how many gates there are to literary opportunities, some necessary, others rather brow-raising. But that's a story for later. Happy new month.
🔥 new stories dropping tomorrow.
Reading for
@SmokeLong
is such an honor, and it was a pleasure helping select these incredible stories. We always keep an eye out for language, originality, resonance, and a full narrative. Do check them out!
It’s cover reveal time! The 12 wonderful stories of Issue 81 will be before your very eyes tomorrow, Monday 18th. What a treat we have in store for you.

Was an absolute pleasure to help pick some of these stories for Issue 80 of
@SmokeLong
. Coming across them on the queue was an instant excitable yes.
These stories are beautifully written, evocative, fresh, and well worth your time.
Congrats to all the writers!
Monthly financial support form for Black writers is open for May.
The prize money from being an RBC Bronwen Wallace Award finalist allows me to bump up the funding amount for the rest of the year--there's even more room now.

Happy new month! Ontario hasn't quite gotten the memo that Spring is here. Relentless snow. Lightning-heavy rain. Perfect for napping and reading and cuddling and horror flicks.
In sunnier news, the financial support form for Black Writers is now open.

For your V-Day needs, if you want to read a fast-paced love story written Nollywood-movie style featuring sentient baby snakes, juju, wicked mother-in-laws, gossiping villagers, and good vs evil, check out my

A thrilling week ahead! So excited to dine with my fellow finalists on May 31, especially

Also excited for the June 1 award ceremony, where we get to read our stories and celebrate each other.
In addition to my

Meet the writers here:
When I was a child, I asked where babies came from. The answer: like Hannah in the Bible, you pray to God, and if you're good, he sends babies. So when our childless aunt came around, I started avoiding her cuz I was convinced she was a wicked, godless woman.
New month, long weekend, smoky skies, and pervading existential unease. Celebrating the smaller moments more often. Weird to hold the future in your heart with both excitement and dread.
In other news, the support form is open for July:
The first micro set in the world of Perfect Little Angels is "Crossing" by the brilliant
@TaylorByas3
. A local myth gains brief, potent intimacy in Taylor's hands.
Deeply excited to expand on the narrative world and background characters of my debut short story collection through the eyes of these deeply talented writers.
Sundays remind me that I had to trade the psychological safety of a church-dictated afterlife for the psychological safety of self-acceptance. Sometimes, I do miss seeing an angel in every night star. I don't miss the years-long stretch of hating mirrors and praying the gay away.
This week's diary entry is the haunting and painfully visceral "Witness" by
@Ethereal_ilo
. Here, queer Nigerian men take front row seats to the violent subjugation of their most natural desires.
Deeply excited to expand on the narrative world and background characters of my debut short story collection through the eyes of these deeply talented writers.
Really enjoyed today's 3-hour Tin House Intensive with
@jamelbrinkley
on Narrative Generosity. Concrete lessons, readings and discussions about making our POVs more compassionate, expansive, and decentered, plus a new list of authors to explore.
